Sadly, in today’s Britain we need to take home security very seriously in order to prevent becoming a victim of burglary. Prevention is the best option to minimize the risks of becoming a burglary victim, some simple, basic measures, which if you can put into a routine can become second nature can help deter the opportunist burglar along with the hardened thief. Always ensure you close the windows and this may sound obvious but lock the door if you have to leave the house, even if only for a few moments or minutes, when in the house and you have the window open never leave the window lock key in the window which is open, how easy would it be for someone to remove the key to use at a later date or time ? Try to get into the habbit of opening the top small opening window not any of the larger bottom windows. Never leave keys hidden outside in the garden, again how easy would it be for someone to watch where you were leaving the keys ? Inside your home always ensure you don’t leave valuables in view from windows or doors, an opportunist thief or burglar may just be passing by and happen to spot your car keys on a coat or key hook just the other side of the front door which you happen to have left unlocked whilst in the back garden – sound familiar at all ? These basic suggestions are just that, basic, but if you can get into these habbits along with other simple securing habbits you will be winning the fight to protect your property.

Moving forward from the basics you can opt for a choice from a wide selection of home security products which can range again from basic devices to some quite astounding ultra sensitive alarm devices. Perhaps the most common and well known would be a burglar alarm, these can start from a simple ‘dummy’ alarm bell box mounted on an exterior wall to make it look as though you have an alarm fitted, these can even come battery powered to illuminate a led to give the ‘dummy’ box more authentication. From these you can install a basic burglar alarm with maybe a couple of pir detectors and a door contact at the front door, to put simply the pir detectors will trigger via any movement while the door contacts will trigger once the contacts are parted – i.e. the door opens. You can also of course go the full hog and install a multi zone, multi purpose monitored alarm system, where you can set up zones within your homes boundaries, by this we mean zone 1 may be the downstairs living area while zone 2, the garage and garden outbuildings and so on, multi purpose means you can incorporate things like safety devices such as a smoke alarm which is also run via the alarm’s master control panel thus incorporating a fire alarm along with the burglar alarm all controlled by the same master panel, these can then all be monitored by an external monitoring station which gets a signal when your alarm activates and they have the authority to call the police or other emergency services to attend your property leaving the system virtually ‘fully automated’.

Along with being great for alerting people to the danger of a burglary in progress, burglar alarms are perhaps the best deterrent to warn a burglar to leave your house well alone. Nowadays being very affordable and in our current climate we would recommend everyone to consider having a burglar alarm installed or opting to fit their own alarm. Along with the basics, having a burglar alarm fitted to your property will help secure your home from the ever increasing threat of burglary.
