Eurail can be one of the most rewarding ways to travel. Sightseers can enjoy the countryside as if on a drive, but without the responsibilities of using and maintaining a vehicle. Navigation is also avoided by traveling on Eurail. With the amount of free time vacationers have on a train, it can be easy to pack too many travel items. Packing only what you need can provide the freedom to move around securely and easily, and also leaves room to bring home items from some favorite destinations.

Among the most important items to bring will be proper documentation. It goes without saying that keeping track of your Eurail pass is a necessity. It is possible to obtain a pass protection cover to help keep track of all of your information. Another necessity is one’s passport. Frequent movement over national borders requires proper documents.

There are other packing essentials to remember as well. Insurance information, of both the travel and health varieties is also important. If one wishes to travel by car it is necessary to have an international driver’s license. Another factor to keep in mind is visas. In many cases, a visa is required for documentation and identification while traveling on Eurail.

There are other forms of documentation that are less important, but are still good to bring nonetheless. Eurail offers traveler’s guides that can provide a great deal of the basic information that will be productive for travelers to posses. There are other useful travel guides that can simplify vacationing in Europe for any individual or family. It is also beneficial to have a timetable for the Eurail system in order to have first-hand knowledge of what to expect out on the rails. Two other helpful items to keep nearby are a map of Europe and guides at least for the major languages that you will be hearing along the way.

As far as hygiene and medical necessities go, packing for a Eurail trip is similar to any other trip away from home. Prescriptions must of course be taken along as well as any other items needed for comfort. Spare glasses and contact lenses should be packed in the event of an accident. It is also important to keep documentation of your medical needs among your luggage. A first aid kit is also recommended. When it comes to toiletries, the basics become necessary. A personal wash kit with toothbrush and toothpaste should be packed along with a shaving kit and any other personal hygiene items that are normally required.

When packing only the essentials for a Eurail vacation, the necessary clothing for your trip will really depend entirely on your destination. Being on the train does not lead to any specific requirements when it comes to attire. However, there is a possibility that the train cab could cool as a result of temperature control, and a sweater or light jacket may provide comfort. It is also beneficial to be prepared for a wide range of temperatures from the movement of the train through various altitudes and landscapes. You also should be prepared for rainy conditions even though you will be inside the train most of the time. At stops you are likely going to want to be outside, and if it is raining you will be benefit from packing some warm clothes.

Besides these packing essentials there are other miscellaneous items to bring along. Many of these will add to your pleasure on the train. Mp3 players, books, magazines, cards, a pen, addresses of anybody you may wish to send letters or postcards to, bottle openers and other useful tools can help out on the train as well. It is also important to remember a European adapter as the standard EU outlet is structured differently then American ones. There will be a lot of time to sit and relax on the train. This can be rewarding because it allows you to take in the sights at a low-stress pace. Having these items can enhance that time, and make your Eurail vacation memorable.

Other important items that can be easily overlooked are sunglasses and umbrellas. Being prepared for a wide range of weather conditions is still important even though Eurail travelers are mostly indoors. It is also recommended to bring a camera and cell phone.

Overall the packing necessities for Eurail are straightforward. It is important to remember that you could be on a train for hours at a time. Packing properly is one of the first steps in enjoying your vacation on Eurail. The ability to make those hours enjoyable is in your hands, so pack accordingly.
