The purpose of the in-patient or residential inpatient is to avoid the patient’s exposure to alcohol that causes his or her addiction. However, not all alcoholics can be involved with the residential inpatient program. They too have lives to live, work to go to and families to attend to. That is why there are also outpatient alcohol treatment programs designed to help alcoholics who have busy lives. The same principles used in residential inpatients are used at the outpatient treatment programs. Every week, the patient is required to undergo individual as well as group therapies for a minimum of twelve hours. However, the alcohol treatment programs for the outpatients are only allowed if the patient is living in a drug-free community. Usually, this treatment program lasts for four weeks up to six weeks depending on the severity of alcohol dependence of the patient.
