Over the last couple of years, oil barrel prices have been increasing at an unprecedented rate. Breaking the $100 per barrel mark last year, it has since crossed the $120 per barrel mark, spelling much agony amongst consumers as the cost of fuel starts to cut deeper and deeper into their pockets. Yet, while the average consumer has no ability in effecting lower oil prices, he does in fact have the ability to reduce his consumption of fuel, and thus decrease the amount of money spent on fuel. We provide you with some useful tips on how you can reduce the effect of high oil barrel prices.

If you are one of those car owners who drive everywhere, even to your local MacDonald’s for meals, you might wish to consider alternative modes of transport instead of driving. Rather than driving and spending on fuel, why not adopt modes of transportation that do not require fuel such as walking or cycling? These methods allow you to beat high fuel cost, while providing you with the opportunity to exercise. This can be very helpful especially if you are always cooped up in the office and not getting your healthy dose of exercise.

However, if driving is simply a must, then you might wish to adopt more fuel efficient driving habits. An example of this would be to adopt gradual acceleration when moving your vehicle off from a stop. Jamming on the accelerator pedal to achieve rapid acceleration only increases the amount of money spent on fuel as a greater amount of fuel is burnt each time as compared to gradual acceleration. Another method which is worth considering would be to drive in high gear. When driving in high gear, your engine would turn at a slower rate as compared to driving at a low gear. The net result would be that your vehicle would require lesser fuel to run. As such, adopting the right driving habits can be helpful in generating savings on fuel for you.

You might be pleased to know that keeping your vehicle well maintained would also allow you to generate greater cost savings on fuel. Some of the things to take note of would be the vehicle’s tires and filters. Make sure your tires are sufficiently inflated before setting off on any journey. Insufficiently inflated tires can cause a drag when driving, resulting in fuel inefficiency by as much as 30%. Be sure to check your oil filters regularly too. Dirty filters often result in more fuel being required and causing your vehicle to work harder than it should. Change these when necessary and you would witness fuel efficiency of up to 25% each month.

In short, there are many measures consumers can take to decrease their monthly spending on fuel and gas. In most cases, such measures are not difficult to adopt and would require a mere change in lifestyle in most cases. However, ability to do so would mean lesser trips to the gas stations and mean greater savings for you.
