Going out to dinner is a past time that people do all over. It may be to get out of the chore of cooking for the evening. You may be craving certain foods that you don’t enjoy cooking or celebrating a special occasion. It may be for a date or to visit with friends. Regardless of why you are going out to dinner there is someone taking care of your needs.

The issue of waitress tips can be touchy though and a subject that many people are confused by. It is no secret that they don’t get paid very much so they rely upon those tips to get them by. Still, there is a general consensus that a tip should be earned and not something that they expect.

That is why so many people get upset when waitress tips are automatically added to the check. This is the policy at some locations due to the fact that they are waiting on large parties. It is generally a 15% gratuity for parties of 8 or more but the specifics can vary by restaurant. This is done to ensure the waitress is well compensated for her efforts.

Other people have a set amount they leave each time. They base their waitress tips upon the price of the meal. They may be leaving 10% or more but that isn’t really fair when you think about it. Some restaurants offer entrees that are $7.99 while others are $15.99. Yet the waitress is doing the same amount of work regardless of how much the food costs.

In all fairness, the waitress tips you leave should be based upon the quality of the service. You can’t blame the waitress if it takes a while for your food to come or if you don’t like it. Pay attention to how they greet you and how they take care of your needs. Be understanding if they are busy though and it takes a few minutes for them to get to your table.

It is acceptable not to leave a tip at all if you got back service. That is your right and you shouldn’t feel obligated to provide a tip if you don’t want to. I know when I get a good waitress that understands the need for extra napkins and such when I am out to eat with my children always gets more. It is because I appreciate not having to ask for each item we need to enjoy the meal.

It seems that in large cities it is expected to leave a bigger tip for the waitress. This is often due to the increased cost of living there. You will need to make your own decision about how much of a tip to leave though. It doesn’t seem right to walk away without leaving something though if you did get great service.

When you are out with a group of friends you will notice that everyone has their own way of deciding on the tip to leave. It doesn’t have to be an overall decision so don’t get into a debate over this one. Each person should leave what they are comfortable with and focus on their food and their company.
