Did you know that Barcelona had a beach?

In fact there are several Barcelona beach areas and they rival the best that the rest of Spain can offer. There are almost five kilometres of sand in the Barcelona region and – on a hot dry day – a visit there really is a great option.

The Catalan capital has become a much favoured and much talked about destination for travellers in recent years. Ever since it hosted the Olympic Games and regenerated itself as a result it has grown its reputation year by year. There are only a few cities in the world that can now rival Barcelona for the buzz and warmth of a modern vacation city destination. Whether your interests lie in food and eating out, history ancient or modern, shopping or simply chilling in a bar or night club – you are sure to find something wonderful here.

Barceloneta is the main and most popular beach area in Barcelona. Its near to the city centre and easy to access. Wide, with wooden decking – it draws the windsurfing and kite surfing crowds in spring and summer. There is lots of space for sunbathing and simple relaxation and the access to the sea is easy along the whole length of the sands. Food is available from a range of nearby restaurants and car access is easy with lots of parking nearby. The Christopher Columbus memorial is situated near to the beach if you are interested in that sort of history.

When Barcelona hosted the Olympic Games a large new marina was built to house the sailing and watersports section of the events. Near to the Olympic marina lies Nova Icaria beach. The area is well maintained and kept very clean by the city council. Disabled access is possible; there are lifeguards, sun beds and showers to use after your swim or your day on the sand. Food and snacks can be had from several bars on the beach and there are other restaurants on the promenade and at the nearby marina. This is a very popular spot with the young people of the city.

If naturism or nudism is your thing then head for Mar Bella beach – it is a common destination for windsurfers and kayak fans – and you can keep your shorts on if you want to! The beach is secluded and much quieter than the others.

Getting to Barcelona is easy these days and the city is a perfect break away destination. Provided you avoid the weekends you should have no problem in picking up a cheap flight deal. Accommodation is slightly cheaper in the outlying districts but don’t forget to factor in the money you will spend on bus or metro travel. Check out the city centre hostels or tourist apartments for some great deals.

The best way to get around is on foot although the tourist bus service is cheap, dependable and flexible. You will also find that the underground train or metro system is really easy to navigate and the stations service all the popular areas and destinations.

Barcelona is a wonderful city – see you there soon?
