The world of jewelry has enjoyed a creative foray into titanium rings, whose durability and sheen are perfect for timeless, yet contemporary jewelry styles. As fashions change, so does the jewelry that many people choose to buy for birthdays, anniversaries, and wedding engagements. Though gold and silver are still popular, titanium has quickly become a popular alternative – and for good reason.

Titanium rings exhibit unique material properties that set them apart from gold and silver. Of course, the metal itself is nothing new–it was discovered nearly two hundred years ago and has been used in everything from airplane constructions to golf clubs. Only in the past fifty years has titanium become a popular choice in fashion. And only in the last decade has it threatened gold’s kingpin placement as the leader in ring wear.

Titanium Presents No Skin Irritation

If you’ve worn jewelry in the past, you may have experienced a skin reaction to a particular type of metal, such as gold or silver. If so, this skin reaction puts you in league with approximately half of the world’s population. Allergic reactions to certain metals are very common, meaning that wearing gold or silver jewelry is out of the question for many people. It can cause rashes and discolorations of the skin, making wearing a ring a painful proposition, if not outright impossible.

Titanium, on the other hand, does not produce these allergic reactions. The metal makes no chemical contact with the oils in the skin – meaning there will be no irritation, even from those who are most sensitive to such metal outbreaks.

Tremendous Strength and Durability

Titanium is the hardest metal known to man, and this makes it highly durable for jewelry; in fact, it makes for titanium rings that are practically indestructible. Titanium comes as welcome news to anyone who has ever broken, scratched, or otherwise ruined a gold ring through everyday use. The longevity of the material also makes titanium rings the perfect choice for people who have physical jobs that require working with their hands.

Dispelling Urban Legends

Over the past several years, one false myth asserts that if your finger swells while wearing a titanium ring, amputation of the finger is the only answer. This is absolutely false. A quick check of the Urban Legends Reference Pages dispels this long held myth, which owes its popularity to the strength of the titanium ring.

People assume that since titanium is so strong, you cannot cut away a titanium ring like a gold or silver. However, this is untrue. A titanium ring is not made of aircraft grade titanium, and thus, can be cut off using a jeweler’s saw or a bolt cutter.

A Growing Fan Base

Due to its durability and adaptability towards many styles, titanium rings have captured a considerable percentage of the market share, one that seems to be growing with each passing year. Gold and silver, which once ruled the engagement ring market, for example, no longer are the exclusive choice for young betrothed couples. Instead, titanium’s accessibility, cost, and strength have made this metal the clear alternative.
