Everyone has psychological baggage. It starts as soon as you’re born and steadily accumulates, as you grow older. Whether this is good or bad for you, depends on the use that you make of it. You can have had successes or failures in preceding years, it doesn’t matter. What matters is the faculty for taking past experiences and making these into positive building blocks to let you go further and faster in the future.

History is full of key figures who failed. The same key figures built on those failures to achieve the success with which everybody now associates them. It’s true in all walks of life. From record baseball scores to leaps in technology, we seldom think of the number of times when somebody struck out or failed yet again to get something to work, when the positive memory of their success makes any failure pale into insignificance.

Repurpose your failures into successes

There is a current business trend that even encourages failure if it can be accelerated so as to bring the eventual success sooner. Think of this as success university. You will learn from your mistakes and pass the same test when it's presented to you in the future. This is not to say that failure is being encouraged for its own sake. It is more that many people recognize that it is very probable and even a natural part of the whole success cycle. When failures come about it is as the result of having taken intelligent, calculated risks that did not lead to any catastrophes, then they can serve as a valuable learning process. You can sort out the positive from the negative, keep what is good and fix what is bad. This is all part of your personal development plan.

With this in mind, we can even say that somebody who claims never to have failed at anything is probably someone who never did anything at all anyway. Owning up to a failure can be viewed in a positive light professionally, if you can also clearly show what you learned and improved as a result. Don’t automatically assume that the company that you work for will condemn you if you make a mistake. Stupid or pointless mistakes, especially those that turn out to be expensive, may have to be paid for. But those that were made in the context of good faith and diligence can make you stronger than before, if you are prepared to learn from them.

Be smart about your experiences

One of the things that you do need to avoid however is to make the same mistake twice. Not only does this indicate that someone has missed the importance of the learning process, but it may also reveal incompetence or worse on the part of the person. As Einstein pointed out, doing the same thing over and expecting different results is tantamount to insanity. Personal development plans are expected to see results. While you may make a mistake the first time, you are expected to learn from it, thus development.

In the learning process not only should you avoid making the same mistake twice, but you should also be able to make fewer mistakes. Your experiences when correctly applied will allow you to forecast possible difficulties and potential failures to avoid them and move more quickly to success quotes.
