With a little time and effort, you can make a reliable road map to success. It’s an exercise and is worth doing, as it will help you to keep on track and motivated towards the objectives that matter to you. Here are some personal development tips to do it:

A. First be clear in your mind how you define success. Often this takes the form of a vision of how things will have changed when you become “successful”. It’s a personal vision and you are the only one who can make this mind mapping task work. It often forms over a period of time and is all the more useful when you can attribute to it a significant amount of detail in your mind.

B. Once you have a good idea of what success means to you, the next step is to look for the stepping-stones that will help you get there. These are often defined in terms of personal development opportunities that are available. There’s a certain amount of realism that comes into the equation here. When opportunities exist and are compatible with the idea of success that you have formed in your mind, then it makes sense to investigate how you can use them to achieve your goals. On the other hand just because an opportunity does not seem to be available, does not mean that you should give up on your idea of success immediately. Look around and do some digging to see what new path you may find.

C. With a vision of success and some idea of the paths to travel on, you can then start to define the separate stages in your roadmap. You’ll want your personal development goals objectives to be clear and well defined, so that you can also break them down into separate steps that increase your chance of getting to the state of success that you have envisaged. Using the SMART way to define your goals can help you to do this. SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound.

D. The separate steps that you defined in the stage above would also make it easier for you to start. This is one of the critical things that hold many people back. When an objective seems too ambitious, and there is no clear route to get there, it is all too easy to shelve the project and to resign oneself to a permanent lack of satisfaction. You can avoid this by having easy bite-sized steps to take where the results come relatively quickly.

E. Finally, while you’re doing this, and while you’re launching yourself on the road to success, be sure to maintain a positive mindset. This is what will spur you on and keep your attention focused on moving from one step to another along the road map that you have built. It will also give you the self-motivation and the momentum to tackle any obstacles along the way. If you are rating your positivism on a scale of one to ten, then always strive to be operating at around the level of eight or nine, whether at home or at work.
