The sampling rate for DVDs is 48,000 samples per second. In other words, 48,000 numbers are store for each second of recording. When watching a DVD recording that a security camera captured, these digits are then converted into waves that are basically the same as those that were originally captured.

Bunches of numbers included in digital recordings, such as on DVDs, can be compressed, allowing them to take up less space. Another advantage of DVD technology and DVD recording is that the record will not corrode as time passes. As VCR tapes age, the tape becomes worn. Within time, it will become difficult or even impossible for a VCR player to read the cassette. On the other hand, Digital technology produces precisely the same waves, each time the numbers on the DVD are read.

The ABCs of DVRs

In the case of home security systems, the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is the means by which digital technology is used. This machine records video in a digital format, onto a medium within the device, such as a disk drive. In the case of surveillance camera systems, it includes the unit and software that uses a computer to allow video to be captured and then played back from a DVD.
