Welcome to our digital world! Digital technology has simply revolutionized the electronics that we use in our day-to-day lives. From computers, to DVD players, and from cameras to iPods, digital products have changed the way that we live. For practical purposes, we simply “know” that digital technology in our security DVR cards and other products is superior to analog technology. Gone are the days of VCRs eating cassette tapes for lunch, and our falling asleep while VCR tapes rewind.

Analyzing analog

We “know” that digital recording is better than analog technology. But exactly how is it better? In analog technology, a wave is either recorded or it is utilized in its original form. So surveillance cameras would capture light waves and sound waves, and then directly lay that data onto video tape. After these waves are captured, they can be read, and then transferred to a TV screen and speakers.

Digital recording by the numbers

How does digital recording differ? Again, analog waves are captured, but this time they are translated into numbers, and then stored onto a digital machine, such as through security DVD cards. The sampling rate for DVDs is 48,000 samples per second. In other words, 48,000 numbers are store for each second of recording. When watching a DVD recording that a security camera captured, these digits are then converted into waves that are basically the same as those that were originally captured.

What are the practical benefits of using digital technology for your security cameras’ recording and playback? Bunches of numbers included in digital recordings, such as on DVDs, can be compressed, allowing them to take up less space. Another advantage of DVD technology and DVD recording is that the record will not corrode as time passes. As VCR tapes age, the tape becomes worn. Within time, it will become difficult or even impossible for a VCR player to read the cassette. On the other hand, Digital technology produces precisely the same waves, each time the numbers on the DVD are read.

The ABCs of DVRs

In the case of home security systems, the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is the means by which digital technology is used. This machine records video in a digital format, onto a medium within the device, such as a disk drive. In the case of surveillance camera systems, it includes the unit and software that uses a computer to allow video to be captured and then played back from a DVD.

One of the primary differences in available DVR cards is the number of channels that it can facilitate. For example, security DVR cards can be used to simultaneously record and play back from systems that include 4, 8, 16, and even 32 cameras. This provides the flexibility you need in a security camera system, to effectively safeguard your house.

At the heart of security DVR cards is digital technology, allowing data to be stored and retrieved more efficiently. In turn, this makes your surveillance camera system more effective in boosting security in your home or office. Digital technology is more than just another number!
