Attacking Tennis??

Most tennis players I know want to emulate the playing styles of the top pros.

Whether that’s the top ATP players like Federer , Nadal , Djokovic or Roddick or the top WTA players like Venus Williams, Sharapova, Ivanovic or Serena Williams, the average club player I see always wants to copy the attacking shots of these players at their own clubs.

There are a few problems however!

Apart from some obvious ones such as grip and stance etc. the fact remains that the average club player approaches the shots in the wrong way mentally (if at all) and that unfortunately for them has an impact on the shot they end up hitting.

But what do I mean by approaching the shot mentally wrong?

Well first of all as I stated above, many players don’t even think about what they are doing or even trying to do so will have no chance of pulling it off but the one’s that do, need to improve their chances of making these shots on a regular basis and that means not trying to hit the lines (or clean the lines as it is often called) every time.

Ok I know we see the top players hitting lines a lot (part of the reason we have the Hawkeye challenge system in place now), but these guys and girls spend a significant amount of time playing and practising at a high level which means that their levels of accuracy are going to be “right up there”.

But for you, the player who plays a few times a week (if you are lucky) we need to change the stakes a bit to still achieve our aim.

So Here Is How You Play Attacking Tennis And Win!!

Hit aggressively to larger targets!!

Simple isn’t it??

Let me explain a bit further.

Let’s say you want to hit an inside out forehand (a regulation shot for today’s attack minded tennis player), you move around into your backhand corner and BOOM, unleash the beast (getting carried away now!).

BUT!!

Instead of trying to hit the singles line on the opposite side of the court, you aim to hit the middle of a hoop placed over in that area.

What does that mean?

Well think about it – if you manage to hit the middle of the hoop you will probably hit a winner as it is unlikely that you will be playing someone with the retrieving skills of Rafa Nadal.

If you hit the near edge of the hoop, you are still likely to hit a winner for the same reasons as above but even if you don’t you are still likely to create a good situation as you opponent even if they get to the ball will probably reply with a weak shot that you can capitalize on.

If you hit the far edge of the hoop (the one nearest the sideline) then congratulations maybe you are Roger Federer in disguise.

The point is this, by using the hoop as a target you have ended up with three shots all of which have ended up with you probably winning the point. If you had aimed for the sideline and missed it on the wrong side by even a couple of centimeters or inches you would have lost the point.

So this is the key to attacking tennis!

Pick your targets and go for your shots BUT hit aggressively to larger target areas and watch your success rate and therefore your results go “through the roof”
