Situated in Devon, Torquay is widely regarded as the jewel in the crown of the English Riviera.

Originally a fishing and agricultural town, since the start of the 19th century the local government set out into turning this quiet, rural village into a thriving, seaside town. Within only a few years, families from all over the UK were visiting Torquay every summer, establishing itself as one of the UK’s leading seaside resorts.

Still, in the 21st century, Torquay is a favourite seaside town amongst families and couples alike. With a population of 62,000 people, this reaches 200,000 throughout the holiday season. Whilst moving slightly aware from the stereotypical seaside resort to a more cosmopolitan town in recent years, these figures still show just how popular Torquay is.

Accessible by either of Torquay’s two railway stations, connections from the UK’s major motorway network or Exeter or Plymouth airport, Torquay is a popular resort not only with British tourists but those traveling from abroad, too. And with so much to see and do, it’s easy to understand why.

As the home town of world famous crime writer Agatha Christie, Torquay is steeped in history. Whether you choose to take in the breathtaking Kent Caverns or the World War II slipways at Beacon Quay, you can be sure that the hours will pass quicker than you can ever imagine as you study this amazing historical venues.

If history is not high on your agenda, Torquay boasts nine, spectacular beaches, filled with families and couples, old and young, taking a relaxing break whilst watching the water sport enthusiasts out on the sea.

With over 500 Torquay hotels, there’s never a shortage of places to stay. Offering a vast array of bed and breakfast’s, guest houses and self-catering cottages, you can be comfortable in the thought that wherever you choose to stay, it’s never going to be far from the main centre of Torquay whilst being affordable and within everyone’s budget.

One point that brings people back to Torquay is that it’s the perfect town for everyone. Whether you’ve got a small family and are looking for a long, two week break or a couple looking for a romantic, long weekend getaway, Torquay is the ideal destination. Furthermore, it’s the perfect place to act as a base when exploring the whole of Devon.

Not a widely known subject, but Torquay is fantastic for divers, beginners and experienced. Offering several diving schools for beginners and those looking to improve on their past diving experiences, Torquay provides some breathtaking underwater scenes.

As the town has had a transformation into a more cosmopolitan town over recent years, you can guarantee that food wise, Torquay caters for all tastes. From the taste of the Mediterranean to a spicy, hot curry taken straight from regionally-influenced Indian recipes, wherever you turn, there’s a restaurant or café suitable for the whole family.

Perfect for families looking for a holiday and couples looking for a cosmopolitan town, Torquay provides something for everyone.
