Types of fishing tackle

There are different kinds of fishing tackle available in the market. They differ in terms of the method used to cast the line and the type of fish you want to catch. Here are some basics on how to cast a fishing tackle.

Spin cast

This is the simplest form of a fishing tackle. A spin cast rod has a straight handle with line guides and a reel mounted on the top of the handle. A button is used to release the line. Spin cast fishing tackle is ideal for beginners.

Reel the line till the end is close to four inches from the rod’s tip. Firmly press on the button meant for releasing the line and hold. When casting, make sure to first find the right location. Once that is done, face your chosen spot, aim the tip of the rod toward your target and press the button. Now all you need to do is bring the rod to a vertical position by bending your arms at the elbow. You’ll notice the rod beginning to bend; this is your cue to bring the rod forward. When the rod reaches eye level, release the button.

When retrieving, add some amount of tension to the line using your thumb and index finger. This will ensure that the line does not tangle. As you reel in, you will hear a click sound; this indicates that the reel has been activated.

Spinning

Spinning is so called because the casting reels spool spins as the line is cast out. It is similar to spin casting fishing tackle except that the reel is mounted on the underside of the handle and the line is released by using the index finger. Since using a spinning fishing tackle is slightly more complex, it is recommended for advanced users.

To hold the rod in the most effective manner, keep two fingers of your rod hand in front of the reel stem and two fingers behind it. Now, extend the first finger of your rod hand down toward the spool to pick up the line and pull it back against the rod. Open the bail arm with your other hand. Ensure that you do this in the right sequence, because if you open the bail arm before you trap the line, the line will tangle at the spool. Now that you’re ready to cast, all that is left is to swing the rod behind your shoulder and then back forward. When the rod is in motion, release the finger holding the line. Since the time of release is critical, such casting requires practice.

Bait Casting

Bait casting is a more difficult form of fishing tackle. However, the advantage of bait casting fishing tackle is that it gives you an unbelievable amount of accuracy and control. If you are able to master the correct technique and put in some amount of practice, you’ll soon realize that bait casting is in fact the most effective forms of fishing tackle.

When casting, hold the rod and reel at a slight angle such that the handles are higher than the spool. Also, hold your rod as if you were holding a tennis racket, but make sure your grip is relaxed and not too tight. If you hold the rod correctly, you’ll notice that your index finger is the only thing that keeps the rod from falling. Also, the weight of the rod will make the butt push up into your palm. Finally, make sure that the area between the side of your thumb and flat of your thumb is resting across the line. Once you’ve mastered how to hold the rod right, the bait casting fishing tackle will no longer be difficult to use.
