The country is continually being hit by ‘economic headwinds’ one after the other. Gas prices have soared to high record levels and everyone is focused on grabbing every opportunity for gas savings. Analysts and economists recommend a lot of gas savings techniques, from correcting bad driving habits, car pool to using gas cards. These tips definitely save gas money but if you really want to save big, then go for using gas cards. Gas cards are also called gas rebate cards since they offer rebates on gas purchases.

There are two types of gas cards. One is the specific card which can only be used at specific or affiliated gas stations. They usually offer higher rebates than most cards but can only be redeemed if you purchase gas at their affiliated gas stations.

Other cards, such as the general rewards card can be used to pay for gas purchases at any gas station of your choice. Percentage rebates offered by these cards range from 2% to 5%, depending on the issuing company’s policies. Percentage rebates are from card to card basis and greatly differs. Some offers introductory rates, higher rates than regular rates while others have rebate limits or have rebate caps. Rebates or rewards points are generally convertible in cash backs that are credited to the existing cards or issued on checks or new cards. There are also cards that offer perky rewards such as airline tickets, product freebies, gift certificates and other forms of rewards.

When you plan on using gas rebate cards, there is one thing that you should be vigilant about-paying your bill in full and on time. Gas rebate cards carry an annual percentage rate that is charged against its maintaining balance. This interest can eat out your gas savings.

When looking for a gas rebate card, there are several factors to keep in mind. Some cards offer introductory rates, a higher or doubled percentage rebate. Don’t get fooled by introductory offers, they only act to sweeten the card. You will be best off with a card that offers a high percentage rebate during regular periods.

Before you sign up for a card, check also the card’s policy on redeeming rebates aside from the percentage rebate. Most card companies automatically credits your existing card with the rewards or rebates. But there are others that will require that you request your rebates. These companies are usually those that offer perky rebates other than the cash back. Consider also the expiration periods of rewards. For some cards your rewards points will expire, usually from a period of six months to one year. So choose a card that has no expiration period , or if not keep track of the expiration period to avoid unredeemed points. Don’t let your savings go down the drain!

Almost all gas savings tips work on saving gas money. Whatever you follow, you generally save on gas money. But if you want to save big, then go for using gas cards. They definitely offer bigger saving opportunities.
