When you are designing a reception area you need to put a great deal of thought into the design process. The most important thing to remember is that you want this area to be about those that are waiting but you also want to make it say great things about you and how much you care about your customers, guests, patients, etc. There are a few things you should strive to provide when planning your waiting area. Hopefully you will find some incredible insight into the design of a proper waiting room below.

Keep it Comfortable

You want to provide a comfortable place for your customers to wait and/or be received. If they are going to be patient enough to wait then you need to provide a comfortable environment for them to do so. This means providing seating, perhaps some form of entertainment, magazines, tables, and entertainment for children that may be with them. You especially need to provide entertainment for the children if your business is child centered. This will make the wait more comfortable for everyone involved.

When it comes to the furniture in particular you want to make sure that it provides comfortable seating first and foremost. The longer the typical wait the more comfortable you want the seating to be. The last thing you want is a reception area that is filled with people who are clock watching due to discomfort. You will find plenty of clock-watchers without giving them another reason to do so.

Another way to keep your reception room comfortable with furniture is to provide furniture that doesn't make the room seem cluttered or claustrophobic. Putting too much furniture in a small space can be a bad decision unless you absolutely need every available space for seating. If this is the case you may want to consider seating options only and eliminating tables or find a bigger reception area.

Coordinate

If style and design are important to you, and you probably wouldn't be reading this if it isn't, then you should take great pains to insure that your furniture choices coordinate well with the colors for your walls, ceiling, flooring, and artwork. You will find that a reception area is much less comfortable when the pieces of furniture and art do not work well with one another or the walls. It is worth taking a little extra time to see everything together before making the ultimate decision to buy any of these things together. If there is one item that you absolutely must have in your reception area then that is the piece that you will need to insure works with everything else. Bring it with you whenever you look at furniture, curtains, blinds, paint, and art. This simple act alone can save you valuable time and money and help create a reception area that is well furnished and well put together.

Versatility

If you want to get the most value for your reception furniture dollar then you need to find coordinating seating that is functional, durable, comfortable, and versatile. No bones about it. Reception areas are often used as multipurpose areas. You need to find furniture for your reception area that is suited for all your reception area needs. One way of doing this is by choosing furniture that can be easily moved and rearranged and having emergency furniture standing by for those times when you need extra seating. The more options for the reception space that your furniture allows while providing the same standards of style and quality you expect, the better suited your furniture will be to meet all your needs.

Consult a Designer

There are designers who will do consultations without doing the entire design for you. This is a money saving way to get excellent advice about style, design, and the arrangement of space without spending a fortune hiring a designer. If you are stuck in your design plans or really need something spectacular in order to give your customers then you just might benefit greatly from utilizing this essential tool for furnishing your reception area or at least guidance and suggestions about the furnishings for your reception area.

When looking for a designer you will want to find one that specializes in business design (if you can find one that specializes in your particular business it is even better). Make sure you find a designer that comes highly recommended or one that designed a business reception area that you personally like. References and portfolios are a must when bringing in someone to design your reception area. After all, this is the place where you receive your business and it says a lot about your business to those that are waiting.

Ask for Opinions

Before you put any paint on the wall or match any furniture to your carpeting you need to get second, third, and any number of other opinions on the furniture, the layout, the colors, and the combination of all things that will go into the design of your reception area. There are few areas that are as important to a business as the reception area from the viewpoint of clients and you need to make sure that area is inviting and visually pleasing. One way to do that is to ask the opinions of others that would represent a general cross section of your clientele.

You do not need all opinions to be glowing opinions but you do need to know if any find the reception furniture uncomfortable, visually displeasing, and (more importantly) if they dislike it enough to leave rather than waiting. Finding out the opinions of others can help shape your decisions on reception furniture and other important details of your reception area décor.

Reception areas can say so many good things about your business. Unfortunately, most businesses use stale design and dated furniture for their reception furniture. You need to wow potential clients and customers with tasteful, elegant, and comfortable reception furniture instead of putting them to sleep like the competition.
