It is difficult to know where to begin when setting up to fish bass. The temptation is to use a bigger setup such as a longer rod and stronger reel, but this can make it hard to know when you've actually caught a fish. A light rod and reel, such as an Ultra Light 5-foot Quantum, can offer a great fight with even 1 pound fish.

Using such a set up and struggling with the fish will allow you to learn how they move and thus prepare you to use a strong rod and reel and fight bigger fish.

To stock your tackle box, start with only what you absolutely need. Don't buy everything available just because you think you might use it- learn to use the basics, such as crankbaits, both a shallow diver and a deep diver.

Select two colors of each- a bright color and a natural color. You will also need spinnerbaits, picking again both natural and bright colors. Make sure to pick up some natural colored plastic worms as well, which will allow you to fish for more time before catching a bass.

Similarly to the way you set up your gear, start fishing in small lakes and ponds first. You catch smaller fish, but the experience will be invaluable when you move on to bigger bodies of water and bigger fish.

When fishing you will need to actively search for bass. Bass love to hide, so try looking around any objects that may be in the water, including boat docks, piers, or bouys.

If this approach doesn't yield the results you want, check the water for any places where the plants or the water itself change. For instance, try looking where the landscape changes from sand to rock or the seaweeds turn to hydrilla. If this still doesn't work, then try anywhere, sometimes the fish just really aren't biting much.

Crankbaits are a very successful method to use for many reasons. A crankbait will stave of boredom- instead of repeatedly casting and recasting, you can play with the speed and depth of crankbait in order to find what works for you. Smooth movement with no surprises is often your best bet in clear water, but varying movement in muddy water will attract fish.

Try casting repeatedly with a colored lure, which may provoke a fish to attack, and use bait scent to attract them. Be sure to contrast your lures as well- natural in clear water, bright in murky water.

This provides something different for the eye to latch onto, attracting more fish. If you can make the lure swim realistically, your chances of a nice catch will also drastically increase.

Be careful where you cast- you make get your lure stuck and lose it, which will cost you both money and time. Again, start simply. Once you master the basic techniques and land small fish regularly, you can move on to the big ones.
