Nutrition For Healthy Weight Loss

When building a house, you always start with a blueprint. You need to describe the final look of the structure, right? But, even the greatest blueprint has no value without key factors, such as proper tools and carpenters that bring the drawing to life.

Weight loss programs operate on the same basic principle. If achieving your ideal weight is the target, you won't have much success without the key factors that will make that happen:

* exercise

* support system

* resolve

* nutrition

Many people will say that exercise is the most important factor. What makes for half the battle and often passes under the radar is nutrition. You can't lose weight and keep it off without proper nutrition.

Nutrition. This is a word that gets thrown around quite easily. What does it mean? Well, it refers to the process of turning food into fuel for the body. Cars function differently depending on the type of fuel inside them. The same analogy applies to people and food.

The building blocks of various foods are standard nutrients:

* macronutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates)

* micronutrients (minerals, vitamins)

* water.

These are the factors that will help you "build your house": shed the pounds and stay in shape. Canada's Food Guide and the US Food Guide Pyramid list recommended daily nutrient intake. The frequency of intake depends on how the body processes the nutrients. For example, micronutrients such as vitamin A are stored in the liver and don't need to be ingested every day. Vitamin C, on the other hand, is passed through urine pretty quickly. Required nutrient intake also depends on your circumstances. A basketball player, a toddler and a pregnant woman all need different levels of various nutrients. Yes, you really are what you eat.

Balanced nutrition gives your body glucose for energy, protein for the immune system, or calcium to keep your bones strong. Realistically speaking, very few people can follow government food guidelines exactly in the course of every day life. The point is to recognize the necessity for different foods in your diet, understand what your body needs in order to function, and apply that knowledge to your diet in a way that it suits you. Remember: variety is the spice of life.

What's the other side of the coin? Malnutrition and protein deficiency. Malnutrition occurs when the tank is running on empty and the body lacks those specific nutrients that make it function. People at risk from nutrient deficiency include but are not limited to: the elderly, smokers, drinkers, and menstruating and pregnant women.

Making wise food choices is the difference between admiring the blueprint and enjoying the view of the real thing. The best way to lose weight is to learn what healthy foods are and some basics about how your body processes foods. Then you will come to realize that it is more what you eat than how much you eat. By developing good eating habits and balancing your diet with right nutrition you can realize your dream goal.
