Different people from many different countries have varying types of hair. This could range from the curly to the straight ones; the blondes and the brunettes. The shapes and colors of hair also vary greatly.

People inherit their parents’ type of hair—this is simple science. But going beyond genetic contribution, other factors could be the geographical location of people around the globe. Hair color and texture could also be altered especially when there are interracial marriages. This mixture of races results into varied hair types and hair colors. As history has proven, people marry outside of their race and this is when the mixture of different genes starts to produce unique hair types.

The U.S., a diverse nation, is one of the best examples when it comes to racial mixtures. In this country, there are people who have ash blond hair; black hair; red hair; silver hair; ash-colored hair; etc.

The Basic Hair Types as Classified by Scientists

Scientists have tried to classify hair types in relation to the three earliest races:

• Asian people who hail from the Orient often have ruler straight hair. The color of most Asians’ hair is black. Among the 3 races, this is the one that best resists damage.

• The Africans from Africa. The climate and other environmental factors in that continent made Africans curly-haired. Their hair color is commonly black and the structure of the strands is twisted.

• The Caucasoid group has the highest percentage of mixture among the three racial groups. Contemporary Caucasoids are highly varied even if they come from the same ancestral group. These people range from the north-west Europeans to the Indian subcontinent. The hair color could be from very pale (blond) to deep black.

Classification According to Shape

• Straight hair
• Curly/Frizzy hair
• Wavy hair

People with curly, frizzy or wavy hair often need special care as compared to people with straight hair. But all hair types require basic hair care such as shampooing, using conditioners, and combing. Among the hair types, straight hair is the type that is likely to break easily as it can stretch especially when it’s wet. Blow drying would often lead to brittleness and, eventually, breakage.

Most teenagers observe that their hair becomes oily upon reaching the period of adolescence. This is because adolescence spurs sebaceous glands to become active. Along with acne, oily hair is also just a temporary part of every teenager’s life. Oily scalp often occurs in people who have straight hair.

At the other end of the spectrum, if hair becomes dry, it is best to wash it just once a week. Most curly and wavy-haired people are prone to dryness so these people should choose their hair care products well. Conditioning is a must and the recommended shampoos are those with jojoba oil.

Sometimes, it is not just the texture of the hair which causes dryness or too much oil on the scalp. Having rigorous activities can also cause oily hair or over exposure to the sun can cause photo damage to one’s hair.

Hair care is quite basic to all hair types; the only distinction is the choice of hair care products that would suit the individual.
