What is old, stylish and a new trend in fashion? Vintage clothing has become a major fashion statement for some women and men. Vintage clothing shops are springing up in most cities and on the web with fashion goodies that may have been stored for many years. Some great finds can be gotten at flea markets and even thrift stores.

You should decide which look you will be replicating by researching the different fashion eras before you begin buying. Authentic looks do not rely on guess work so this is important. Availability of items and accessories, price, and comfort should all come into play. Another consideration is to find a flattering, age-appropriate look so you do not appear dowdy or as though you were in a costume. You will want to look as though you stepped back in time gracefully. You can visit websites, watch old movies, browse vintage magazines or even ask older people as part of your research.

There are some tricks and caveats to vintage clothing shopping. Sizes of items were smaller years ago and since they do not match todays numbers, bring along a tape measure to compare the actual size to your measurements to insure a good fit if you are unable try on the item. Examine the garments closely for any signs of decomposition of the material, especially at the seams and points of wear as not all vintage clothing has been stored properly.

Colors such as light blue and lavender are prone to fading, so carefully check your piece in bright light to make sure the color has remained even. While it sounds unglamorous, smell the item to make sure it does not have a musty smell which could indicate fabric degeneration and that no moldy smell is adhering to the garment which could be hard to remove and aggravate allergies. Suede, leather and fur items should be examined under the linings to avoid purchasing pieces that are dried out as they will rip very easily. Read the care label on the clothing and if there is none, check with the store or seller about the fabrics qualities such as shrinkage, fabric content, etc.

To keep your clothes in good shape, you may need to give them special handling and not use harsh detergents. Store them properly in a closet on strong hangers. Do not put leathers or suedes in plastic bags since it dries them out. Perfumes and deodorants may leave stain since older fabrics absorb more deeply so apply those carefully.

Part of the fun of recreating an older look is selecting accessories. If you can nott find the exact period match, go with items that are modern reproductions or ones made slightly earlier than your era but that harmonize. It is relatively easy to find costume jewelry for your look but shoes can be more difficult. New shoes that are copies of styles from the original era, such as ankle straps and wedges, work well. This hold true for purses too. Do not forget those little touches which include handkerchiefs, gloves, scarves, compacts and hats. Hats were a major fashion statement and will do wonders for making your look authentic. Accessory shopping will allow you to use your creative talents.
