Some people may disregard acne and think it as a painful passage of youth but what most people fail to consider is the fact that it is a serious skin disorder. If not held in check by proper medication, it can be a life-long battle that will eventually scar you for life.

Acne is thought to be caused by hormones usually released in massive amounts during a person’s teenage years. Hormones like testosterone can cause the sebaceous glands to produce high levels of oil in the face and body and combining with dead skin cells, will result to clogged pores. These clogged pores are in the form of pimples while inflamed ones are pustules and cysts. Some theorizes acne as a genetic disorder. Studies have shown that if one of the parents had acne once in their life, their children have a good chance of getting acne too. Although some people blame diet and hygiene as acne culprits, they have been proven to be not the direct cause of acne.

They can however, aggravate acne. Acne can occur in both young and old people and the most important thing to consider is that it can be treated or at least controlled. Medical experts have given several advices on the proper treatment of acne to prevent its prolonged attack and put it effectively under control.

1. Nip acne at the bud. Mild acne can be in the form of small pimples that often look like rashes from afar. This is a sign that you are developing acne. Clean you face daily and make it a regular habit. Use a mild soap, something that is non-comedogenic or allergy-tested. Some physicians prescribe baby soap or mild soap like Dove. You can apply over-the-counter ointments of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to dry out the pimple. Use them only on the affected area. If you need to wear makeup, choose non-comedogenic (will not clog pores) ones and make sure to take them off when you get home.

2. Start treatment if your acne is already in its moderate stage. Use more aggressive products like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and retinoids. You can also use prescribed therapy like laser treatment or chemical peels. Combining treatment can be more effective.

3. Prevent scarring. Never pick on your pimples. Do not pop them out and if you need to, ask a trained professional or your dermatologist to drain cysts and the larger pimples. Antibiotics can also help with the healing process although you need your doctor’s permission to go ahead with antibiotic treatment. Acne scars for some people is worse than the acne itself.

4. Consult a doctor as soon as possible. At the first symptom of acne, consult a physician. Home treatments may be resorted to but qualified physicians can prepare medical treatments for you and can monitor your acne’s progress. If your acne requires corticosteroids injections or cyst draining, your doctor can do this.

5. Keep it simple. Diet and lifestyle might not be direct causes for acne however, they can make worse the situation. Lessen the use of makeup as well as products on your face. Eat a more fruit and vegetables and stave off on greasy fast food. Refrain from smoking and keep your stress levels to a minimum.
