There are many people on a global scale that are suffering from oily skin, and having this particular skin condition makes them prone to develop outbreaks of spots and acne. They also generally have a very shiny complexion that is a result of the excess oils being secreted.

Given that there are some serious drawbacks to having oily skin it is very important that a proper skin care routine is in place in order to keep the excess oils under control. But in order to treat oily skin as effectively as possible it is often best to understand why it takes place.

Excess oiliness takes place because the glands within the skin are active and as a result are producing too much oil. This oil is needed in order to help keep the skin moisturized and supple, but there is too much that is when problems can take place.

Why this excess production of oils takes place is not really known but there are a number of possibilities as to why it does happen such as environmental and hormonal factors. The problem with this excess oil is that it acts as a glue and is therefore more likely to attract dirt and other bacteria. And when this dirt and bacteria becomes trapped that is when spots, blackheads and even acne appears on the skin.

What needs to be done is to make sure that any excess oils are absorbed and to prevent and pores of the skin becoming clogged. So it important that the upper layer of the skin is cleansed as thoroughly as possible. It is also important to exercise a level of caution needs to be exercised when caring for the skin, such as it is important to avoid any products that contain alcohol as this has a drying effect on the skin, which in turn will result in more oils being produced.

Many of the products that are available for treating oily skin are not very effective, and so it is better to make sure that you are using products that are naturally derived and are based upon plants and essential oils being used.

It is also important to make sure that the products are anti-bacterial and that they control the levels of oils being released. One effective ingredient that is able to do this is watercress extract, and this helps the skin to look less shiny over time.

Getting the right technique is also important when it comes to caring for oily skin, as over washing the skin or cleansing too often can also cause the skin to become more oily. Twice a day is more than enough, and you should only wash your skin a third time if your skin is very dirty, but not necessarily very oily.

If you are skin is oily during the day that it is always good practice to have some simple tissues to absorb any excess oils.

Face masks are also a good way to help to absorb excess oils and these are also very effective at deep cleansing any dirt or bacteria that is deep within the skin. And it is not just skin care that you need to be aware of, but also make sure that you have a sensible diet and that you are drinking lots of water.
