High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a condition that aides in the development of many diseases and other conditions. High blood pressure is when a patient's blood pressure is at a chronically high level. If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to prolonged illnesses and even death.

Hypertension is a leading cause of strokes, heart attacks, aneurysms, heart failure and chronic renal failure. There are two types of high blood pressure. They are essential, or primary, and secondary high blood pressure.

Essential high blood pressure is when doctors cannot pinpoint how or why a patient is suffering from the condition. There is no medical explanation regarding how the patient has high blood pressure. Secondary high blood pressure is when there are outside factors or secondary factors that cause the increased levels of high blood pressure.

Hypertension is also labeled as refractory if the patient's blood pressure cannot be lowered to a normal level even when the patient is taking two or more medicines to treat the condition.

There are a handful of stimulates that aid in the development of high blood pressure. They are sleep apnea, being obese, the enzyme renin, sodium, age, genetics, liquorice and a resistance to insulin. All of these stimulates can cause high blood pressure if not properly controlled. The uncontrollable stimulates, like age and genetics, can obviously not be avoided. There is a way for people to avoid dealing with high blood pressure. Eating a healthy diet, limiting sodium intake and consulting the proper medical care when required can help to reduce the risk of dealing with high blood pressure.

The enzyme renin is a leading factor in the development of high blood pressure. Renin is secreted by the kidneys and when the amount of secreted renin is lower than normal, this can lead to high blood pressure.
Sleep apnea, also a factor that affects high blood pressure, can be avoided with weight loss, a tonsillectomy, sinus surgery or the use of a CPAP. A CPAP machine pumps air into the lungs of a sleep apnea patient, preventing the lapses of breathing that are attributed to sleep apnea.

High blood pressure is usually diagnosed during a routine physical examination with a patient's doctor. Patients who suffer from high blood pressure usually have symptoms of insomnia, fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, facial flushing and headaches. Not all of these symptoms, or side effects, occur at the same time for a patient. Most patients with high blood pressure only experience one or two of these symptoms, not all of them.

After being diagnosed with high blood pressure, patients can treat it with weight loss, reducing sugar intake, reducing sodium intake, eat more fruits and vegetables, discontinuing the use of tobacco and alcohol products, and most importantly reducing stress.

High blood pressure, if diagnosed, can be controlled and doesn't have to take over one's life. If high blood pressure is diagnosed but the patient does not take care of the situation then the outcome could possibly become deadly. High blood pressure doesn't always lead to heart attacks or strokes but the probability is higher for a heart attack or stroke if the condition is not taken care of properly.
