In today’s era of frequent job changes, global markets and an unstable economy people are finding that moving house is becoming a bigger part of their lives. Going from place to place and carting all your precious cargo with you is as commonplace now as changing cars used to be.

While it’s exciting to relocate to a new place, the act of moving itself is not fun, and no one enjoys the process. Even seasoned world travelers would prefer to just wake up in their new home with everything miraculously unpacked and organized for them. Unfortunately for most of us our finances dictate that we do the bulk of the heavy lifting ourselves.

The Stress Of Moving

Moving is a stressful process. There are so many things that have to be taken care of when we move that it can seem overwhelming at first. A giant ‘to do’ list accompanies any change of address, even if you are just moving down the street.
The trick is to become an expert in the ‘art of moving’. This will help to lower your general stress levels and make the transition to wherever you are going that much easier.

What Do The Experts Do?

The single biggest issue when it comes to moving (and the one people tend to forget about) that will make or break your day, literally, has to do with boxes. Yes, cardboard boxes are the most important part of any relocation process. Experts understand this, most regular people don’t.

Generally when us regular folk have to move, we start making trips to the supermarket to beg for old stock boxes or sometimes we borrow boxes from friends out of garages that haven’t seen the light of day for a long time. We look in the back of our offices for filing boxes and anything that has four sides and is made of cardboard that we think will be fine for Grandma’s fine china. This has traditionally been the way most people pack.

Of course when the professional movers show up to load our boxes into the truck they inevitably quote more and shake their heads as they try to stack misshapen and uneven boxes in the back. When Grandma’s fine china comes crashing through the flimsy cardboard of the borrowed boxes they remind us that their relocation insurance doesn’t cover grocery boxes that we packed ourselves.

This is the reality of moving day.

Not All Cardboard Was Created Equal

Cardboard boxes are designed for their intended purpose. Filing boxes are designed to hold files not books. Grocery boxes were designed to hold produce not china. If you actually spend some time looking at cardboard boxes you will see that some come reinforced and some don’t. This is why it is imperative if you want your belongings to show up at your new home intact, that you buy proper moving boxes.

Investing in boxes designed specifically for relocating will save you time and money in the long run. One reason for this is that moving companies charge by the space your stuff takes up in the back of the truck. Moving boxes are designed to stack to conserve space. They are also designed to be strong enough to protect your precious cargo and most moving companies do have insurance coverage for proper moving boxes.

On top of that moving boxes won’t contain creepy crawlies and insect infestations from your neighbor’s garage that will set up residence in your brand new home.

Buy new or used moving boxes from a reputable company and save money on the headache medication.
