You do not need to be a master of the Spanish language to be able to communicate properly. You just need the most common Spanish phrases and surely, you’ll get your message across easily. Sure, some people will adore your broken Spanish but ultimately, it is better to be able to properly communicate using this foreign language.

Conversation Phrases: Spanish to Get You By

These phrases will help you in telling others that you only speak a little Spanish:

•No hablo español-I do not speak Spanish
•¿Habla usted inglés? -Do you speak English?
•No comprendo- I do not understand
•Mas lentamente/despacio, por favor-Speak more slowly, please

Spanish Wining and Dining Made Easy

It is natural for you to get hungry and this is particularly true if you are traveling. Whether you dine in the nearby diner, in a private home, in a fancy restaurant or an expensive hotel, the following phrases are necessary in communicating the needs of your appetite:

•Tengo hambre- I am hungry
•Tengo sed -I am thirsty
•Quiero ver el menú, por favor -I would like to see the menu, please
•Quiero pedir, por favor - I would like to order, please
•La cuenta, por favor- May I have the bill, please?

Many food establishments put tempting pictures in their menu and offer familiar dishes such as ensalada mixta (mixed salad), arroz (rice), pollo (chicken) and patatas (potatoes). You may opt for these dishes but then again, where would your sense of food adventure be?

Money, Money, Money

Travel will never be possible if you don’t have adequate money. To avoid having problems with your money, make use of these familiar phrases:

•Quiero cambiar algunos cheques de viaje, por favor -I would like to change some travelers checks, please
•¿Dónde se puede cambiar dinero?-Where can we change some money?
•¿Cuándo abre/cierre el banco?-When does the bank open/close?

Understanding the basic monetary terms will definitely help you in keeping track of your bills and coins.

Doctor, Doctor I am Sick

Illnesses are part and parcel of traveling. Use these phrases to get the type of medical attention that you need:

•Estoy enfermo -I am sick.
•¿Podría llamar a un médico, por favor?-Could you please call a doctor?

A few gestures can actually inform your doctor where you’re hurting. Complex medical conditions, however, requires a Spanish translator.

Spanish Phrases for 911

The following Spanish phrases are also helpful in times of emergency:

•¡Socorro!-Help!
•¿Hay una comisaría de policías cerca? - Is there a police station nearby?

You would hope that the police shall be able to provide assistance especially in instances when you lost your passport or when you want to report a theft. If you’re simply lost, it should not hurt to refer to police officers.

So grab that decent English-Spanish dictionary and pack these bagful of Spanish phrases and you’re definitely ready for the adventure of your life. ¡Tenga un viaje seguro!
