Since aging is a natural process, a lot of people accept the fact that they will age eventually and can not do anything to prevent or avert it. More often than not, this fatalist attitude toward growing old can actually accelerate the process of aging. In reality, however, there are a lot of things you can do to slowdown aging, especially with that of your mind. You really do not have to live with memory lapses and impairment of cognitive functions.

If you want to have a healthy and active brain even during your old age, read on and follow the tips below:

Don't Stop Exercising

Regular exercise can do wonders for your brain. It is important to remember that anything that makes your physical aspect strong also makes your mind healthy and well. Thus, do not forget to sweat it out for at least thirty minutes a day to reap the benefits. Furthermore, if you are feeling a little stressed out, stretching and low-impact exercises can also immediately boost your mind.

Get A Hobby

Learning a new hobby or craft helps a lot in exercising your mind. Moreover, having a hobby that you enjoy can help you relax after a hard day's work. Lastly, it would keep you busy during your retirement, so you do not spend most of your free time watching the television.

Read A Lot

The best way to keep your mind buzzing is by reading newspapers, magazines and books. Reading about current events will help you learn new things about the world everyday. Meanwhile, reading fiction is important in tapping your creativity and imagination.

Eat Fatty Fish

An important nutrient that your mind needs is essential oils, such as Omega 3, 6 and 9. You can find these nutrients from salmon, cod, mackerel, tuna and other fatty fishes. Olive oil and nuts are also good sources of essential oils.

Laugh Out Loud

It has long been known that laughter is the best medicine. This is also true for those people who want to continue to have an active mind and brain. So keep on laughing and having fun.

Do Mental Exercises

Many people suffer from memory problems because they do not challenge their minds anymore. If you are interested in boosting your brainpower, you have to challenge your brain every so often. How can you do this? Of course you need to play puzzles, mind games, math problems and even crosswords. Remember that your brain is considered as a muscle, so the more you use it the stronger it becomes.

Don't Forget The Fiber

You don't have to think only of the nutrients you need to consume. You also have to take in consideration the things that come out of you. If you are constipated or have problems eliminating waste materials and toxins, then your mind will not function properly.

Avoid Stress

Too much stress can be unhealthy not only for your body, but also your mind. Several studies have shown that chronic stress can cause permanent damage to your brain. You can ease your stress by performing relaxation techniques, such as yoga, meditation and tai chi.

Get Easy On Caffeine

Although coffee and other beverages that are high in caffeine can give you a jolt when you are feeling sleepy, too much may also prevent you from resting or sleeping well at night. If you have to drink coffee, which is rich in antioxidants that your body needs, just limit it to two to three cups a day.

Have A Restful Sleep

Sleep is very important in maintaining a healthy mind. Make sure that you sleep a minimum of five hours a day. If you can sleep a lot longer, so much the better. Taking 20-minute naps during the day can also help boost your brainpower.
