Jewish weddings in Toronto are performed in open space under a chuppah. The chuppah is a shelter used in Jewish weddings. It is made of a sheet stretched over four poles and symbolizes the home a couple will build. Traditional Jewish weddings have many rituals that signify the purpose of a marriage. A Jewish groom is referred to as the chatan and the bride is known as kallah. In Jewish weddings, the chatan and kallah are viewed as the king and queen respectively. When preparing for their wedding day, the chatan and kallah can hire a DJ for the reception. They can also hire a band or a musician who can play or sing Jewish music.

Pre-wedding festivities in Jewish weddings begin in two different locations because the bride and groom do not see each other the week preceding the wedding. Before the wedding day, the groom, bride and their respective parents write a document detailing what the groom promises to fulfill to his bride. All the knots on the groom’s garments are untied. This symbolizes that all bonds are broken except the one he is about to make to his bride. Traditionally, in Jewish weddings, the groom and bride fast on their wedding day. The reason given is for them to purify their souls.

Jewish weddings in Toronto will ideally take place under an open sky. This symbolizes God’s promise to Abraham that his seed would be numerous like the stars in the sky. The men escort the chatan to the chuppah and the women escort the kallah. The groom waits for the bride at the chupah and this symbolizes his welcoming her to the new ‘home’.

When holding Jewish weddings in Toronto, the bride and family members circle the groom seven times. Number 7 is significant in Judaism and it represents the seven days God used in creating the world. After circling the groom, the bride then stands on the right side of the groom. Under the chuppah, three things happen. First, the groom gives the bride the ring. The ring has to be plain without ornamentation or blemish. The ring is placed on the forefinger of the bride’s right hand. The ketubah, which is the marriage contract, is read and signed. It is the property of the bride who must have access to it throughout their marriage.

For Jewish weddings in Toronto, several people are then called to recite the seven blessings. After the blessings, the couple then drinks the second cup of wine. The groom breaks the glass with his right foot. This is done in remembrance of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.

The bride and groom adjourn to a secluded room. Here the couple breaks their fast. This seclusion in Jewish weddings alludes to the privacy they should be accorded. It also alludes to their new intimacy. This completes the Jewish weddings ceremonies and what follows are wedding feast. A feast to honor the occasion just as a bar mitzvah follows the ceremony. Jewish music or live entertainment is provided for the guests. One can hire a videographer who will shoot their video and photographer to take still pictures.
