When it comes to traveling whether abroad or regionally, you will need to generally prepare beforehand. This is easy if you have been on flights before, but many people are first time flyers. Knowing the tricks of how to fly safely can insure you pass easily through the security checkpoints without being held for a more intense search. Of course, intense searches can take extra time which you may not have.

Having tips on speedy travel plans will mean having a checklist of what you can and cannot wear. If you dress the part, you will find it is easy to get through security checkpoints. While there are lists of what you can and cannot take with you, knowing how to dress the part can insure you get to where you want to go.

The first step is always, without fail, to give yourself plenty of time. Being rushed is not a good idea when flying. There are too many possibilities of what can slow you down. In addition, you will want to avoid alcohol before you arrive and even during the flight. This may not be a problem for some people, but if you are intoxicated, you may arouse the suspicions of the security personnel.

This is a list that the TSA, or Transportation Security Administration, has listed on their website for how to dress the part when you have travel plans that include any type of air travel.

Do NOT wear:

“Heavy jewelry (including pins, necklaces, bracelets, rings, watches, earrings, body piercings, cuff links, lanyards or bolo ties)

Clothing with metal buttons, snaps or studs

Metal hair barrettes or other hair decoration

Belt buckles

Under-wire bras

Hidden items such as body piercings may result in your being directed to additional screening for a pat-down inspection. If selected for additional screening, you may ask to remove your body piercing in private as an alternative to the pat-down search.

Take metal items such as keys, loose change, mobile phones, pagers, and personal data assistants (PDAs) out of your pockets.

Place heavy jewelry and other metal items in your carry-on baggage or in plastic bags if they are offered, until you clear security.

Pack all your coats and jackets in your baggage when possible. All coats and jackets must go through the X-ray machine for inspection. These include, but are not limited to, trench coats, heavy winter coats, suit jackets, sport coats and blazers. If you choose to wear an outer coat or jacket to the checkpoint, you will need to either place it in your carry-on or put it in the bin that is provided for you.”

Remember, anything that sets off the sensitive metal detectors WILL need to be accounted for by the security agent. If you need to ask for a personal pat-down, you can ask for this and help insure your flight and others’ flight is safe and secure.

When you want to travel, knowing the rules to follow will allow you to travel safely. Traveling these days can be tedious, but you do not have to be filled with doom if you plan on traveling via air. Simply come prepared, knowing the rules; your next flight will be painless and comfortable.
