The MDF File Format is generally used to denote a media descriptor file which can be created by burning the CD into an image file. There are some misconceptions and demystifying names used in relation to MDF Files which misinterpret thee file format.

With the use of various burning softwares such as Alcohol 120% and Magic ISO, images can be created to the DISK form a Proprietary CD/DVD. This .MDF File Format is used to describe the Media file but is also know by some other names such as the Microsoft MS SQL File Format. The .MDF Fie Format can be stored easily on the disk as an image of CD/ DVD even if it has corrupt sectors which the other formats do not support. This is commonly used by softwares like Alcohol 120 % for ripping the data of media file by creating an exact replica of the original CD/DVD.

.MDF file can be explained as the copied version of CD/ DVD. This copy can be placed on the hard disk after creation and ripping of disk. The .MDF File Format can be easily converted to ISO which can be further used for video or image files.

Searching on the Internet one can find various softwares which shall help convert the CD/ DVD data into .MDF File Formats. Some of the softwares such as mdf2iso and ISO Analyzer tool are used for converting these files to ISO format. Another great software available on the internet for converting images to readable format is Magic ISO which is also a popular and freeware tool. Magic ISO can convert, extract and edit the files which are the most important feature of this software.

Using MDF File Format

By default all MDF files in the system are treated as CD/ DVD files. Some effective softwares are required for using these files. All operating systems today support the use of these .MDF File Formats. Few softwares like the Daemon tools can be used for this purpose alone. All the software required are available on the internet but only few are freeware and aid softwares are effective softwares which provide complete functionality to the user by providing editing. These softwares help open and easily converts MDF to ISO file. These can also be mounted as drives on the system by using converter software.

Use of MDF File Formats

Various image files are available on the system. Few of them namely .BIN Files and ISO Files. The .MDF files are created by editor softwares which make the exact image of the DVD/CD on the hard disk which can be mounted or converted to digital media. Another beneficial feature can be editing which is done to change these files.

Another file along with .MDF is .MDS which is created to store the header information of the complete file.

Why to create .MDF File

The basic purpose to create .MDF File is to store the exact replica of CD/ DVD on the disk. This shall enable user to open, view, edit and convert the data to ISO.

There is lot of information available on the internet for MDF files and its conversion techniques. Various softwares which convert the file to ISO format are freely available on the internet. These softwares have limited functionality and are not able to edit the files. To do so, one needs to purchase the full version of the software. By purchasing the full version of the convertor softwares one can not only convert but also edit huge media files and copy them to any disk or CD/DVD.

So, the next time you find your media files in image format use .MDF File format do not confuse it with any other Format. This is the Media Descriptor Format and shall be used to store the image of the CD/DVD on the disk.
