Building bad ship models don’t really have to happen. Most of the time, it is because we get in a hurry and are ready to get it done. We have to learn to slow down if we want to know how to build a model of Viking ships. All through history we have been fascinated by the ship in a bottle. I have to admit, even as an aging baby boomer, I am still amazed at the patience and skills that have been demonstrated by the master ship model builder. You can’t help but ask “how did they get that ship into that little bottle?”

Ship models come in all sizes from the WWII 1/96 ship models, 1/87 scale ship models to even manned ship models. The more popular models are made from one but they are available in metal and plastic. Each one takes time and patience to build. For some reason, the wooden ship models are very popular. I guess it has to do with the large flowing sails. Our imagination takes out to sea where we catch the wind and sail around the world. The Anita ship wooden model has a special historical meaning to us when Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

Building model ships has been around a long time. It isn’t something that only been happening in the last century but dates back to ancient Egypt. In fact, several of their models that have survived through the ages. The ancient Egyptians even used their ships to carry their dead out to sea. It has been estimated that many of these ships are nearly 5,000 years old.

When we think about ship modeling, it is the Europeans that come to mind not the Egyptians. The Europeans models date back to the 12th century. Many of their models have been found in churches. The domination of the British navy during this period led to wide spread interest in model ships especially military style.

The development of tinplate and vast improvement in wood working tools has led to an increase interest in the art of ship building. Even the internet has the increased the awareness of model ship building. The model ship evangelist promotes their hobby quite well and allows the “common folks” to learn more about this interesting hobby.

How much could one spend on a model ship? Well, the old question comes up, “how much do you have?” The kits are an excellent way to get started. They usually come with just about everything you need. That good but I want to build a wooden model ship.

Wooden model ships can be found in kits but many people want to literally make their own. Some of the most beautiful wooden ship models have been made from a person tenderly and lovingly carving the wood. They agonize over each cut. The goal is to make it perfect. Naturally, if you trying to buy one of these hand carved and cut boat, then you better be prepared to spend some serious money. Imagine the compliments you will receive when people see this beautiful ship sitting on your fireplace mantel.
