Taino Indians once populated Puerto Rico for about a century. The Spanish Crown claimed it in 1493 following Columbus' second voyage to the Americas - same with the other Spanish colonies in the regions of the Caribbean. Spanish way of life prevailed with a blend of Puerto Rico, Taino ancestry and African influence. Puerto Rican’s national identity was formed with the sovereignty of Spain in the end of 19th century. The first independence of Puerto Rico was gained in the mountain region of Lares in1868 when patriot Grito de Lares revolted against the Spanish regime. Puerto Ricans attained their U.S. citizenship in 1917, and their duly elected governors have served the office since 1948 as the head of government. In 1950, Puerto Ricans lived their lives with less known fights for independence in the town of Jayuya. Finally, in 1952, an act that provides the constitution for self-governance as a Commonwealth connected with the US was ratified and enacted by the Puerto Ricans through voting.

Puerto Rico is an exotic place for anybody who wants to visit a tropical paradise, lively city, hot desert, and cool mountain location. The island of Puerto Rico is now one of the most popular places to visit; it also has an original fort for which the islands’ history is listed. The island is not that huge, but the people are extremely friendly. Enthusiastic tourists will be captivated by La Isla. Old San Juan, with well-known Castillo de San Felipe Del Morro, is a distinctive place to wander. Experience the beauty of life in a different view by rainforest hiking, scuba diving or swimming in Vieques' sparkling bioluminescent seawater.

Esperanza and Isabel Segunda II are two main "touristy" neighborhoods in Vieques. In Esperanza you will find the Malicon, several small "guesthouses", restaurants, gift shops, a museum, and two dive shops on the strip. Esperanza is more like a housing area. There is also a small park, quite a few buildings in the amazing Malicon. The Isabel Segunda II indeed is the main area of Vieques. The buildings are near together and much of the shopping can be done in Isabel Segunda.

Culebra is a small island off the east coast of Puerto Rico's main island and north of Vieques. This detailed island metropolis is known for its world famous beach, the Flamenco, one of the world’s best and considered to be the top 10 beaches. Besides Flamenco Beach, there are also many other beautiful beaches in Culebrita.

Biggest town in eastern Puerto Rico is Humacao. Its beaches aren’t the best and it doesn’t have too much to do, but it is known for the resort that is in it. In Humacao you will find the largest and the most complete resort in the Caribbean, the Palmas del Mar, wherein you can enjoy playing tennis, golf, swim in beaches and pools. You can enjoy staying in various hotels, villas, even in residential areas. You could spend time visiting stores, dining in restaurants, take pleasure in nightlife, and experience horse back riding as well. Humacao also has a nature to explore, where you can go kayaking and discover the beauties of this little known paradise.

In the Northeastern tip of Puerto Rico you will find Fajardo, a large town where you can find many things to do, because it is right in the middle of everything, though there are still a lot to do in Eastern Puerto Rico. In Fajardo, you can see ferry dock Cabezas de San Juan Natural Reserve, bioluminescent bays, El Conquistador Hotel located right next to El Yunque, Seven Seas, and many more.

In Puerto Rico there are three bioluminescent bays; one of these is the Mosquito Bay slightly off Vieques, being amongst the most luminescent in the world. It is lighted with a peculiar blue-green light created by plankton that thrives in these unique ecosystems. Go kayaking with Eco Tours all the way to Fajardo’s Las Croabas Lagoon. This is the easiest way to take from the capital to San Juan. Motorboats have been prohibited in order to promote eco-tourism and to preserve the bays. Kayaking is the most finest and easy way to get there and in doing this, you can ask for a guide if you are somehow nervous or if you are traveling with children.
