The term 'Mentor' finds its origins in Greek mythology and represents an older, wiser being who offers their knowledge, experience and guidance to a Protégé or apprentice, and they do so free of any expectation of reciprocation. Mentors are individuals who understand the importance of offering their advice, in a hope that their student becomes equal or better than themselves in a chosen field of study or expertise. An example of this selfless process can be found in the world of Classical music, where Johann Christian Bach (son of J.S. Bach) mentored Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. And it could be said that Mozart has turned out to be the more recognized musician.

So how do you go about finding a mentor? Well, you have surely heard the saying, “A reader does not always choose the book, rather sometimes the book may well choose the reader.” This age old saying also applies to finding a mentor. So when it comes to seeking an advisor or teacher, do not underestimate the fact that circumstances may well bring you into the company of the very person that you seek! So be sure to stay open to opportunities that present themselves and listen closely to those around you and soon you will find yourself in the company of those you are seeking.

Choosing a mentor may sound easy, but in fact there are various levels of commitment required from both sides. Also, your mentor needs to be familiar with your field of interest. For example, if I were seeking a mentor in the private loan industry, I would seek out someone like Russ Dalbey, rather than say, Martha Stewart. Now, Martha Stewart may have the qualities and characteristics that I admire in a business person, but she does not possess the intricate knowledge regarding the specifics of the cash flow business. You will tend to gravitate towards someone who mirrors your own level of integrity, honesty, work ethic, and beliefs.

It's also important to keep in mind that mentors are not idols; they are not heroes and the process of finding a mentor involves seeking someone who can offer wise and trusted counsel. Mentors are individuals who are able to recognize your potential and bring about a positive process of growth. At the end of the day, a mentor is someone whose influence will resonate with you throughout the rest of your life. The world famous golfer, Tiger Woods, one of the greatest athletes of our time, has a coach and mentor who will travel with him forever; his father. To this day, even though Tiger Woods' father passed away nearly two years ago, you can guarantee that he still hears his father's voice whispering within, “Let the legend grow...” And you can be sure that this simple phrase has more influence than ten thousand fans cheering him down the 18th fairway.

A mentor is a powerful ally to have in the world today and choosing one should not be undertaken lightly.
