Detox, detox, detox--this seems to be the battle cry of most health fanatics today. And here is where a detox diet comes in. A detox diet is the answer to today's rampant unhealthy but delicious and convenient modern foods and eating habits.

Diets used to be aimed at merely reducing excess weight to gain a sexy body. But health buffs today know more. We need to be rid not only of excess fats but also harmful toxins. Thus, the popularity today of a detox diet.

The word “detox” is a short coined word for detoxification. We need to have our body systems (respiratory, blood, and digestive, nervous, endocrine, and lymphatic, among others), purified from toxins through a detox diet. Toxins are more rampant in our more modernized world where everything is done through short-cut methods.

Short-cut methods applied in food mostly involve the introduction of chemical ingredients. This is common among processed foods. The small amounts of preservatives, modifiers, emulsifiers, food coloring, and tenderizers put in foods accumulate in our bodies. Soon, in a potent concentration, they destroy our bodies. The good news is, a detox diet takes care of this in a healthy and safe way.

Some toxins are also produced in our bodies naturally. For instance, ammonia results when proteins breakdown in our bodies. Some toxins are introduced through the skin or nose, like pollution, secondary cigarette smoke, inhaling airborne toxins, and exposure to lead, mercury, and heavy metallic substances. We need a detox diet in these cases.

A detox diet is simply getting rid of foods that give our metabolism process added hard work. Foods with too much salt, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, calories, proteins, and fats are examples. Meat, pork, cream, cheese, margarine, butter, and deep fried foods, are such foods. Instead, we focus on veggies, especially raw, fruits, fruit juices, and lots of pure water.

Herbs, herbal teas, and whole grains are also parts a detox diet. Healthy oils like olive oil and virgin coconut oil may also be considered in a detox diet. Many serious weight-loosing and detox aficionados add fresh coconut water among the diet items.

A detox diet aims to rest the digestive system of solid foods by taking in mostly natural and nutritious fluids. This can more easily flush out toxins from the body. Then, the body naturally reduces weight and the metabolism process is reinvigorated. The body easily takes in nutrients fast. This is the rebuilding phase of a detox diet, which is very important because just cleanising it will not have any long lasting effect.

Among the benefits of a detox diet is the body’s natural process of healing itself. The adage that food is medicine is true with detox diet principles. If we feed the body with natural food, it naturally repairs problems in our body systems and gets rid of ailments naturally and more permanently. This alone makes a detox diet worth trying and following it to the point.
