Every guy out there likes to play. Some might even say that we never grow up. Those little boys simply morph into bigger boys who still like to play and have toys. The toys just get bigger (or smaller – think Blackberries) and more expensive – think boats, motorcycles, etc...

So what’s the appeal? Why do guys have this persistent need to play? First of all, playing games, fiddling with electronics, or driving high-speed vehicles is a way to burn off our stress. Most of the guys I know are under a lot of stress; perhaps providing for a family, worries about job-performance or for some even serious illness at home.

Playing games and such are all ways guys can relax. Frankly, we enjoy the challenge of besting the activity in question. How fast can you drive their bike? How many tunes can you get onto your i-Pod? How many times in a row can you win on the pool or air hockey tables? All of these help a guy through his energy into something creative --- something that helps us release stress.

Are there other reasons besides relaxation for playing? Absolutely. Playing helps keep you young, and whether a guy knows it or not, this is one reason he plays. Having fun while playing with a toy, games table or a sport keeps the mind and (usually) the body active. This keeps the body healthy, thus allowing you to live longer.

Get a couple of guys together to play a game, and you have instant social benefits. The game itself gives us something to talk about, since we don’t seem to have the female “chat” gene. Besides, our girlfriends and wives like to create instant gathering with guys we’ve never met. What else are we going to do?

Guys playing games also gives us an unobtrusive way to size each other up. Are you aggressive in your games? Do you play to win or to have fun? How aggressive is the other guy? Playing together lets each man learn a little bit about the other guy’s personality, and gives cues as to whether or not they will hang out in the future.

For many men, playing and winning a game with other guys is a way to prove his masculinity. Domination on the air hockey tables, on the Wii baseball game, or while racing jet skis are all (relatively) safe ways for them to show off their prowess and their superiority over the other males.

Guys like to also discuss, usually in great detail, the procurement of the said toy or game. We enjoy talking about the hunt for the item in question, and the great deal we unearthed. We may also boast about the expense of the toy or game, which just feels good.

No matter our reasons for playing games or with “big boy’s toys”, guys like to play. It helps us relax, show off, is typically good for our health, and lets us preen a bit in front of each other. All this is natural male behavior, and good reasons for guys to play.
