Many people think that menopause is a woman's condition but according to conventional wisdom is there such a condition as male menopause? It is true that as men advance in age the hormone levels decline in the body. An example of those hormones is testosterone. This progressive hormonal decline experienced can result into a condition known as andropause, which is estimated to be experienced by about 5.1 million American men. Male menopause is less abrupt compared to menopause in women. It can be likened to walking down a hill but not jumping off a cliff. However, you should know that waning testosterone in your aging guy is likely to cause depression, mood changes and irritability. A decrease in hormone testosterone increases the man's chances for heart diseases. The man's risk to injury increases due to the reduced bone density.

I want to clearly explain that andropause is quiet different from mid-life crisis. Mid-life crisis is conventionally agreed to be a psych-social issue. Andropause is not experienced by every aging man who has the inevitable hormonal decline. Not every man above the age of 40 that is qualified to experience male menopause. When a physician tests the blood and finds out that testosterone is below a certain level, he declares that the man has a medical condition known as andropause. If the diagnosis is revealed the treatment with testosterone replacement is mostly the major option. The therapy is administered to the patient depending on the health history of the male in question. Research about side effects of testosterone replacement therapy is still being carried out.

However the most obvious symptom of decreasing levels of testosterone is actually a decline in libido. It is the hormone responsible for the burning passion in males. Many men mistake andropause for erectile dysfunction because they both conditions usually occur around the same stage in life. Most men facing male menopause turn to erectile disfunction medication to boost their erectile ability. In several cases the medication usually works only for a while and men continue experiencing decrease in arousal. With time the gap between desire and arousal becomes continually wider and most men become greatly disappointed when the medication does not give them the sexual desire they had anticipated for. This is explained by the fact that erectile medication do not raise testosterone levels in the body.

The best way to deal with noticed less sexual drive is by first accepting the existence of male menopause. Failure of this will lead to more frustration. A couple should address the concept by meeting an endocrinologists to check the man's hormone levels. Beyond any medical therapies people should know that sex just like beauty evolves with the passage of time. For men who are open to deep levels of intimacy and different sexual experience, the passage of life is very rewarding. It is unfortunate that very few men understand the concept of sex. They feel low if they cannot perform sex the same way they used to when they were in their 20's. They feel that something has to be terribly wrong if they cannot enjoy sex the same way they used to. Changes in sexual functions are inevitable and we should look at it with an open mind.
