It can be very scary and intimidating starting a new job when you do not know what to expect. The best way to curb your anxiety in entering a new company is to prepare as much as possible before your first day on the job.

This holds true for starting an internship college. Starting a college internship can be particularly intimidating because you probably will not have much, if any, experience in a professional work setting and therefore you probably do not know what to expect. There are things that you can do to prepare yourself for the internship college though so you can curb some of the anxiety that you may be feeling.

If possible, ask a former intern from your college internship for any advice they can give you on what to expect and if there is anything you should know starting out. To find a former intern, you could check with your college to see if any other students from your program of study completed the same internship college as you will be completing. If another student has completed the college internship, your college should have a record of this, especially is your college requires students to complete an internship college. You could also ask your internship college employer for the names and contact information of former interns. Keep in mind that the company may have a policy against giving out this information or they might not legally be able to give it out.

If you are unable to contact former interns, you can try speaking with anyone you know who has worked in your future career field to see if they can give you any tips and insight as to what you can expect. Some people to speak with can include your college professors, who have probably worked in a job relevant to your career. These professors have probably also worked advised other students that have completed an internship college such as the one you will be completing and so they will probably have a general idea of what you can expect during the internship. Others that you may want to contact include any former employers that have experience in the professional world and maybe even your parents. Most students’ parents have been in the working world for many years and will be able to provide valuable insight on what it takes to succeed.

Another wonderful resource to chat with is your future boss as the internship. This may well be the best route for you because the employer will likely have some great advice for you on how to prepare for the position. They can provide you with specific company guidelines and can provide you with insight on the company’s environment.

Overall, one of the best things you can do when feeling unsure of yourself going into a new job is just put a smile on your face and enter the position with a positive attitude. Other employees at companies are usually more than eager to get to know the new employee, so just keep this in mind on your first day and show an eagerness to get to know everyone. These tools should set you on your way to fitting in quickly.
