Phosphatidylinositol is a small phospholipids component which is found in the cytosolic side of the cell membranes of eukaryotic. This molecule, being an amphiphile, possesses the polymorphic behaviour and is one of the topics of research in various academic studies.

Composition

Phosphatidylinositol is also a class and type of phospholipids that is made up of glycerol fatty acid. The base is replaced by a hexahydric alcohol known as inositol. This alcohol of hexahydric mixture is found as the stereoisomer. On hydrolysis, the mixture includes one mole of glycerol, two moles of fatty acid, one mole of inositol and three moles of phosphoric acids. They are also known as the most acidic of all phospholipids. Phosphatidylinositol is a major lipid which is also a key membrane constituent. It acts as a participant in some of the major metabolic processes in all animals and plants. It is directly found through a number of metabolites.

Phosphatidylinositol features

Phosphatidylinositol is acidic phospholipids which has phosphatidic acid backbone and is through the phosphate group to inositol. In many of the organisations, the stereo chemical form is the myo-D-inositol and there are also other forms which are found in plants occasionally. Phosphatidylinositol is quite abundant in the brain tissues and can amount almost up to ten percent of the phospholipids. It is also found in all cell types and tissues. Phosphatidylinositol is less than phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine compounds.

Experiments in animals

The fatty acid composition of Phosphatidylinositol is distinctive, which are shown in lots of researches and studies that have been experimented on rats. The animal tissue has lots of characteristics. They have a high quantity of arachidonic and stearic acids. The Phosphatidylinositol forms are less abundant than the diacyl form. Phosphatidylinositol is formed biosynthetically from the cytidine-diphosphate-diacyglycerol compounds. This is a reaction which has inositol and is catalysed by the enzyme. There is also another product of the reaction. The enzyme is found mainly in endoplasmic reticulum and occurs in the plasma membranes in yeasts. Phosphatidylinositol is delivered to other membranes and is through vesicular transport or through the specific transfer protein agency.

Mechanism that is involved in Phosphatidylinositol

There are specific mechanisms which are for biosynthesis of phosphatidylglycerol and Phosphatidylinositol compound. In animal tissues, Phosphatidylinositol is a primary source of an acid called arachidonic acid. This acid is required for the biosynthesis of certain elements. Phosphatidylinositol has lots of vital roles in interfacial binding of the proteins and also in the protein regulation at the interface of the cell. As Phosphatidylinositol is polyanionic, they are effective in some of the non specific electrostatic interaction with the proteins. But, they are effective in certain binding which are called as PH and are regarded as domains of the cellular proteins.

Phosphatidylinositol phosphate is also the main source of diacylglycerol which serves as a signalling molecule found in plant and animal cells. They regulate the group activities of a dozen related enzymes which are called as protein kinase C and which in turn controls lots of key cellular functions. This also includes proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation and metabolism. Overall, the biological action of the components is released and is subject to intensive studies over the past 20 years. There are few bacteria which are present in Phosphatidylinositol compound and include inositol lipids that are found in actinobacteria.
