Motorcycle Safety Tips

Whether you have been riding a motorcycle for ages or you are simply in a place where you are looking to start, you will find that you always need to be mindful about your own safety and that of the people around you. Although they have a reputation for danger, motorcycles are quite safe to ride as long as you keep a few things in mind. When you want to make sure that you are going to be riding safely, here are a few tips that you need to keep in mind.

1. Wear a helmet

Whether they are required in your area or not, a well-fitted helmet is an important part of any rider's gear. You'll find that a helmet can prevent a huge number of injuries both small and large and in the event of an accident, they will reduce the extent of damage to the head and brain a great deal. Look for helmets that have a DOT label, meaning that it is a helmet that has met federal regulations. Anyone who gets on your motorcycle should have a helmet as well. Remember that once a motorcycle helmet has suffered an impact that it should be replaced.

2. Appropriate clothing

When you are riding your motorcycle, remember that every inch of skin should be covered. Even thin clothing can provide you with some protection in the case of a wipeout, and ideally, you will be wearing clothing that is specifically meant to do just that. Don't wear shorts on your motorcycle; there is no protection for your legs at all should you fall, and you will also find that it is easy to burn yourself when your bike is running hot. Make sure that the trousers that you wear are relatively fitted and that they won't tangle with your kick starter or your foot peg. Some people choose to wear chaps over their jeans for added protection and many motorcyclists choose to wear leather jackets no matter what the weather. Similarly, invest in a pair of good leather boots that will cover your ankle and protect you from both abrasion and crushing impact; find boots that zip up or buckle, rather than ones that tie, because laces will get in the way.

3. Good visibility

When you are looking for the things that will keep your motorcycle riding safe, you will find that you should look around for something bright to wear on your torso, especially if you want to ride at night. Some motorcyclists will wear reflective yellow or orange vests over their jackets to make sure that motorists will see them.

4. Gloves

When you want to make sure that your grip on your handles stay firm, no matter how cold or hot it gets, you'll find that you need a good pair of leather gloves. Leather gloves are quite common, though you can find gloves made out of other materials that have a great leather grip. When you want to make sure that your sleeves don't billow out and flap behind you, you'll find that you can find gloves in the gauntlet style, with cuffs that go over the edges of your sleeve and keep the wind out.

5. Shield your eyes

There are plenty of motorcycles that don't have windshields and if that describes yours, look for ways to protect your eyes. You may be dealing with dirt, rocks, insects and other things that might come flying through the air at you, and even the wind can cause you to tear up and fog up your vision. Look for goggles that have high quality plastic lenses or a helmet that has a good face shield. You will be looking at material that should be made out of shatter proof material, as well as being ventilated in order to keep your breath or your body heat from fogging it up. Remember that you should only ever use tinted shields during the day; during the night, clear shields will give you the visibility that you need.

6. Everything in its proper place

If you like to go for longer trips on your motorcycle, you'll find that you need a place to store everything. Don't simply carry something strapped to your body and don't tie it to your bike. Unless you do a very good job of tying everything down, you will find that you might be facing the loss of your things as they fly over the highway, and in a worst case scenario, things tangled around you and the bike can cause an accident. Make sure that you invest in some large sturdy motorcycle saddlebags that will carry all of your things and keep them safe.
