You have read about it in books or even watched movies about them but you were wondering what a dude ranch is actually. Dude has originally meant a man who dressed neatly or a gentleman. Over the years it came to mean a friend. Dude is therefore an idiomatic expression for a man with fine qualities.

In the wild west where things are quiet unsophiscated and raw, a dude is taken to be somebody who is inexperienced in horse riding. The term has a long history in the west. During the gold rush and the inhabitation of the west by Europeans, many people had grown up in the cities and were therefore not used to the west. As they traveled west, they needed people to help them with basic horse riding, farm maintenance and adjustment to the rural life. Thus the term dude was born.

So a dude ranch became a place where non-residents would come to lodge, carry on their business and then leave after a day or two. It was basically a rural motel. Gradually, the context changed and now dude ranches have become vacation points at which many city dwellers got o experience the west.

On a dude ranch the typical city dweller will receive riding lessons, go on hunting or fishing expedition and take the cattle out for grazing. It is a way to afford the urban dweller an experienced the wild west in a controlled manner. He will be able to enjoy the lifestyle of the average rural dweller.

Many people travel to the west to see how life is lived there. Whilst remaining paid guests, they are able to live life like a typical rancher. Staying for anything between a day to weeks, they help the host with their chores, feed the cattle and look after the horses just like they were part of the family. Occasionally, they are taken out for expeditions or such as hunting so they can experience the outdoor life too.

Dude ranches in sum, serve the accommodation needs of the man from the city dweller who has traveled to the west to do business or simple have a holiday. In the course of the stay, he experiences the life of the rancher as if he is part of the family. This type of lodging is becoming a favorite pastime time of the urban holiday seeker who is tired of so much concrete and honking of horns and would like to seek something more rustic and natural.

Investors who go into this aspect of rural real estate will be capitalizing on a growing trend that promises lots of returns. Many people are returning to the rural area which no longer is the old poorly services area. Now mobile telecommunication is available and the increase in powerful 4X$ vehicles makes the once inaccessible area now easily traveled. You will notice that the price of rural property keep appreciating, which is a reflection of the growing demand for it. Many city dwellers would like to take advantage of the quest for rural land and then live amongst its serene environment. They want to enjoy their favorite sport such as fishing, hiking and kayaking in the rural setting. No longer will they want to live the busy and noisy urban place. For these reasons, you may notice that the price of real estate will keep going up. An investment into this area will therefore be a good thing. You can use the raw land for equestrian and hunting purposes. You can also use it for fishing. At most, you can build a dude ranch and then offer vacationing opportunities for guests.
