Many people look to start a home based business for the obvious conveniences that such businesses can provide: being your own boss, doing something you are passionate about, flexibility in schedule, generally low overhead costs in getting started, maybe even the comfort of working in your pajamas. Given all of the benefits of having a business in one's home it is no wonder it appeals to potential entrepreneurs of all backgrounds and skill levels. Anyone, from stay-at-home moms or retired individuals, to those who simply have an idea and a desire, can start and maintain a successful home-based business.

One essential element for any entrepreneur, but especially for the home-based businessman, is strong organization and self-motivation skills. Without scheduling the tasks necessary to get a business off the ground and having the focus and drive to keep that business on track, it is easy to let the distractions of the home take priority over growing this new occupation. Working from home undoubtedly provides many perks, but it also provides some pitfalls that must be planned for in order to avoid them. Imagine a leaky faucet, a favorite television program, children's carpool, laundry, or a ringing phone. If you are at home relaxing during the weekend these are ordinary activities, but to the home-based entrepreneur these are all common distractions that he or she must work around.

Creating a strong business plan can help the at-home business person not only avoid these speed bumps, but also grow their business faster. Considering the equipment, time, additional education, and funds required to get a business off the ground is a good place to start. Doing so allows for the creation of a realistic time line for getting the business up and running, as well as setting goals and benchmarks for both short and long term growth. An at-home career requires the same attention and care that an office-based job does – the difference being that the effort put in directly benefits the at-home entrepreneur instead of some corporate hierarchy.

Once a satisfactory business plan has been designed it is time to begin implementing that plan. A great place to start is setting a firm schedule and budget. For example, consider how much money is needed for routine operating costs. In many cases the at-home entrepreneur can use the household's existing services, so this can be a minimal addition to the established household budget. However, underestimating additional costs of phone lines and utilities, transportation to meetings, office supplies, and marketing efforts can have an impact on a business's success and profitability. In addition to operating costs there may also be extra expenses needed to get the business up and running; creating business cards to establish a business identity for example.

Keeping a detailed and realistic schedule that allows time for education, marketing, research, building a strong professional network as well as the business's infrastructure help the savvy at-home business person keep pace to achieving their goals. And when those goals are achieved the satisfaction is that much sweeter because it is the result of the individual's own hard work and dedication.
