How does a person gain social recognition? The answer depends on where and when we are talking about. Years ago in European countries, a title of nobility would certainly give one social status. In contemporary United States, social recognition comes primarily from celebrity status in the fields of entertainment (movies, music, sports) and from “stuff” you own and show off, in other words, wealth.

Occupation is also often connected with status. Doctors nearly always perceived as having high status. The title “Dr.” in ones name is one of the few titles in common usage in the United States. Politicians are the other occupation that regularly use titles in their names, such as Councilman, Representative, Mayor, President, etc.

Often people will attempt to gain status by displaying things that they hope will make them perceived to have status. Wearing expensive name brand clothes, jewelry, and accessories and driving expensive cars is a perfect example of this. This of course assumes that the person is in a face-to-face situation. If they are dealing with someone via email, mail, or telephone, these visual clues will not be there.

Alternatively, a title in someone’s name can be effective in both face-to-face and non face-to-face situations. I’m not aware of a formal social study, but there are a number of anecdotal reports of people using titles in their names and getting remarkably different responses compared to not using titles.

You will have to admit, particularly in the United States, that someone that is presented as “Baron Stephen H. Reynolds,” for example, is unique if not downright exotic and intriguing. Do you think that someone making an inquiry might get just a bit more attention as “Baron Stephen H. Reynolds” verses “Mr. Reynolds”? I do, and as mentioned above, there are several real examples of people that have found just that.

The fact that noble titles are rarely seen or used in the United States makes them both exotic and curious at the same time. The natural reaction, assuming a casual social atmosphere, is “Baron of what?” or “How are you a Baron?” Not only a great launching point for starting a conversion, but a social status boost as well.

Unfortunately, legitimate noble titles are not particularly cheap, but are obtainable. As for political titles, you will just have to get yourself elected to get one of those. And the “Dr.” tile? Many years of school and tens of thousands of dollars will get you one. Given the alternatives, the noble title is really the most feasible.

Given the fact that a noble title is the route you want to go, the next question is what exact title. Some of the titles include Baron, Prince, Count, Viscount, Marquis, Prince, Knight and others. Your budget and availability of the titles will of course play a role in your decision. Beyond that, you may want to research the background of the various titles to understand the historical significance and meaning of the various titles. Finally it comes down to a subjective decision on what sounds good and goes well with the rest of your name.
