One of the most difficult situations to find yourself in when you are driving your vehicle is when you aren’t in control of the road, that is when another driver is driving sporadically because they are distracted or even worse driving under the influence. The usual response that drivers have is to drive off, get past the distracted driver as fast as they can and hope that nothing happens as they go by. The situation however shouldn’t be taken so lightly, police and experts suggest that even if the person isn’t intoxicated and they are merely distracted by say a cell phone you have to approach with extreme caution.

The most common suggestion is that you avoid them by driving defensively, rather than floor it past them, give the vehicle a wide berth and approach slowly. If the road is only 2 lanes or even just 1 lane, it might in fact be safer if you get off of the road; however that is not always an option. So here are the things you should do.

First you need to consider the environment you are in, the road surface and the weather can assist in some emergency situations. Often times you may find yourself having to “swerve” around a distracted driver which means that you have to consider how well your car is going to stay on the road and maintain control as you make it in front of the other vehicle. Second, the other drivers body language, behavior, and appearance can tell you a lot about the situation and how you should react.

Next you should calm down your own driving and make sure that you are doing nothing wrong in case an accident or bad incident should occur. Cell phones are one of the most distracting things that we have all found ourselves involved with on the road, whether it is the pesky teenager texting all of his or her friends at one time, or the business man who never hangs up the phone so that he can keep his company running smoothly. The way to be careful with drivers who are incessantly talking on the phone as they are driving is to wait it out until they hang up, this provides an optimal time to pass them and avoid any problems that could’ve happen if you acted too soon. Of course there is one option that can be your solution every time, and can even attempt to make the other driver correct his ways. The police are always out and ready to respond when drivers are putting other people at risk.

When drivers are driving erratically the police can pull them over, and if they are driving too poorly they can even get their license suspended or a ticket for reckless driving. So the next time you see a driver who has no regard for the lives of the people around him or in his own vehicle, do everyone on the road a favor and handle the situation in whichever way you think would be best.
