Gout is regarded as one of the most extremely painful forms of arthritis and usually has a rapid onset. It is also one of the more frequently recorded medical illnesses in history. Caused by an inflammation of the joint, gout usually occurs in one area of the body - the big toe. One in every 200 adults suffer from gout, with the bulk of them being in the age bracket of 40-60 years. Most victims of gout are post-menopausal women, and though gout can attack the young, this is rare.

What are the symptoms of Gout?

Although the small joint at the base of the big toe is the most common site of an acute gout attack, joints that are found in the instep, knee, wrists, elbows ankles and fingers can also be affected. The infected area is usually warm, with swelling reddish discoloration, tenderness and excruciating pain resulting. The tenderness can be overwhelmingly, so much so that even a light touch can bring intense discomfort. Some individual's even develop a fever with gout attacks, but thankfully, many of these symptoms subside in a few hours or days. For a rare, unlucky few, the attack can last for weeks. Unexpected, repeated arthritic attacks could also occur.

What causes gout?

Although the direct cause of gout is still under debate, most doctors are arriving at the conclusion that gout is a genetic ailment that is facilitated by the body's inability to process uric acid. If your parents had gout, then you have a 20% chance of developing it. An abnormality in processing uric acid can produce numerous conditions like arthritis (gout attack) and kidney stones. Many patients develop elevated blood uric acid levels without any known catalyst.

Fast facts

1. British people are 5 times more likely to develop gout

2. American blacks are more likely to have gout than other populations, while African blacks are less susceptible

3. Alcohol consumption, beer in particular, may increase the risk of gout

4. Uric acid levels increase in men and at puberty and at menopause for women, so most men develop gout at an earlier age (30s to 50s) with women obtaining it post menopausal (50s to 70s)
