Sciatica is severe and debilitating pain caused by the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down the legs. Spondylolisthesis is of degenerative disk disease where one vertebra slips slightly forward over another vertebra, pinching the sciatic nerve. Piriformis syndrome involves the piriformis muscle that runs directly above the sciatic nerve. If the muscle becomes tight or goes into spasms, it will place pressure on the sciatic nerve causing pain to radiate down the back of your thigh, but not below the knee. Prolonged sitting can contribute to piriformis syndrome. Spinal tumors and injury caused by car accidents and falls can also damage the area, contributing to the discomfort, soreness and shooting pains that are often associated with sciatica.
