One main concern of homeowners is how to keep their things organized and where to store them. This is especially true for households that have many members. As years pass by, we accumulate more and more things and we cannot let go because of the sentimental value. Then before we realize we have run out of space where to store them. If only you could fill your house with storage cabinets!

So how do you store your things if your cabinet does not have enough space anymore? The answer is simple – create one. Storage space does not have to necessarily mean building or buying a cabinet. This is the time to think out of the box – literally.

Doing open shelving is one way of creating storage. Instead of letting your stuff be buried under piles of boxes, why not put them up as display. That way your shelving will look more of a display area rather than a storage space. Take advantage of every niche or recessed part of your wall or if your house has a full height you can do a shelving unit all the way up to the ceiling. Not only will you create storage but also a feature wall as well.

If you are the type that wants to conceal your things but does not want to make your home look like it is being overcrowded with cabinets, what you can do is build a cabinet with flush-closing doors that blend into the walls when closed. This way you can create storage even in your living area without your guests knowing that you actually have something hidden behind the “walls” until you open the door and take out something.

Another option is to buy furniture pieces that have double purpose. Nowadays, furniture makers are aware of the storage needs that they design their products in such a way that it can also serve as a storage space. For example, instead of going for the regular bed frame, go for the one that has underneath shelving for your small items. Or if you need to divide a space and you are thinking of getting a divider screen, why not go for a freestanding bookshelf that could serve as a screen and as storage at the same time.

If you are a person who loves boxes, then it is time to collect more of them and use them as decorative storage. What you can do is buy boxes of the same design and color and stack them nicely along a wall. You could label each box so you will know right away what each one contains. Be sure not to over stack, though, for it will be quite troublesome for you to get something at the bottom if you have a tall stack of boxes. Stacking up to 5 boxes should be more than enough to give you extra storage.

With these ideas, you should be able to create more than enough extra space for your trinkets. There are many other ways to come up with clever storage. You just have to be imaginative and be bold enough to try new ideas.
