A look at the different types of blinds on the market today and how they can be used in different ways to create a variety of design themes.

Blinds are a popular window covering in all manner of buildings, commercial, industrial and residential. They come in a large variety of designs meaning that they can suit almost any purpose; their use in interior design is also growing, with designers preferring the straight, clean lines of blinds to the flowing curves of curtains and drapes. As a consumer it is hard to know what type of blinds to opt for with such a large range on the market currently. Styles differ greatly form space saving varieties to sumptuous folding types; ultimately the choice is that of the homeowner. Hopefully the following information will give the reader an idea of the types of blinds on the market and the materials used in their construction.

One of the most affordable types of blind on the market that does not surrender integrity is the faux wood variety. Typically these are manufactured in polyvinyl plastic and then coated to resemble wood. The benefits of these blinds include durability, simplicity of cleaning as well as high resistance to warping that affects real wooden blinds. While in the past it would have been easy to spot faux wood models, modern variants are unmistakeable. Additionally, faux wood will not fade as real wood does; this is due to UV inhibitors that have been introduced in the treatment process. As this type of blind is not susceptible to warping and moisture they are considered perfect in areas such as bathrooms and kitchens where humidity is likely to be high. Having said this, real wood blinds can look great in many homes, slightly more expensive but bringing a sense of warmth that is truly unique.

Aluminium blinds are a lightweight solution and as such are great for people with mobility issues. Being so thin they do not keep heat in greatly although they are good for the summer months. Being so thin they suit doorways and shallow window bays perfectly, being scratch resistant they are also durable enough for use in most houses.

Most blinds fall under the category of Roman blinds although there are certain designs that resemble these original shades greatly. Normally these are created from material and as such are soft and stylish. They get their name from their use throughout the Roman period and hence are great at regulating the temperature of a home, as they did thousands of years ago in the Mediterranean. With a large selection of colours and patterns to choose from they are a designer's dream, and a valid alternative to buying expensive drapes and curtains.

Doors are also the perfect place to fit blinds. Floor to ceiling windows can also be effectively covered with blind solutions. PVC vertical are a great blind for long windows as raising and lowering a blind this length can be tiresome, with a simple turn of a knob it is possible to let in more light or vice versa. Normally weights will be put at the bottom of these blind to prevent too much movement; rooms with French doors will suit this type of blind perfectly.

Today blinds are an effective window covering that come in a large number of different styles. Naturally all of these styles are available in different colours, patterns and even in opaque varieties meaning that designers are left with a large choice when decorating. More affordable that custom made curtains they truly are the modern answer to the window covering problem.
