What is Organics Skin Care?

An organic Skin Care product is one where the raw ingredients (eg plant extracts, waxes, oils), are not treated with pesticides and other chemicals while growing or during processing. Natural products, such as sea weed as a fertilizer, can be used in the process as long as these products also are organic.

Further tests are done to ensure the plants purity and organic status right through the production phase of a product. This guarantees the organic status, and therefore a much better product. The key bodies providing this certification are The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia (NASAA) or by Australian Certified Organic (ACO).

Why is Organic Skin Care important?

Many of us use more than 20 different beauty products a day, including: shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, moisturiser, toner, cleanser, talc, body lotion, deodorant, foundation, concealer, eye shadow, lipstick, nail polish …… the list goes on. These products are applied directly to the skin, lips, around our eyes and hair. The problem is that our bodies absorb chemicals through our skin, and we know some of these chemicals can accumulate. But we don’t know at what concentration these chemicals turn toxic, damage our DNA, react with other chemicals or cause other health problems.

This means we are absorbing and ingesting a huge amount of chemicals each day, unless we do as so many consumers are already doing, and switching to milder and less harmful organic alternatives. Scientific research may vary on the severity of damage that cosmetic chemicals cause, but the one sure thing is – it’s not natural.

Pressure from consumers is now encouraging the skin care and cosmetic market in a new direction; towards organic skin care and cosmetics.

Skin Care products are going organic

Organic Skin Care products are growing quickly across the world and are the next generation of Skin Care. This is not a fad, but a change in what consumers are demanding from their Skin Care products.

They say that imitation is the best form of flattery. Interestingly over the last few years the major brands, have released “organic” or “natural” products. But there is a world of difference between these products and truly organic products such as MiEssences, Mukti, Clariscents and Pure Earth.

Organic Skin Care – What to look for?

So what do you need to look for when shopping for organic Skin Care and what should you avoid?

Look for products that:

• are certified by The National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia (NASAA) or by Australian Certified Organic (ACO).

• have natural products in their ingredients lists

• contain do not contain petrochemicals, parabens, or sulphates.

• use natural preservatives like tea tree oil, or a combination of various essential oils that have antimicrobial activity (eg lavender, lemon, rose, rosemary, sage, sandalwood), grape seed extract or honey.

• are Australian made. Not only does Australia have stringent organic standards, but agriculture in Australia a relatively new and therefore has better quality growing conditions than its overseas equivalent.

Avoid products that:

• have the word “organic” or “natural” in their brand name but don’t have organic certification.

• have lots of chemical sounding names in the ingredients list

What types of Organics Skin Care are there?

The great thing about Organic Skin Care is that it is now available in a huge range of products including moisturizer, lotions, cleanser, exfoliant, mask, washes, soap, ointment, massage oil and much more.
