Here we go with Big Fat Lie Number Two:

To really grow your business you absolutely must hand out business cards, flyers, CD’s, DVD’s and most importantly, samples.

We’ve all seen it and it pains us just as much to watch it as it does to actually do it.

There you are, walking through the mall with your spouse or kids and you see them.

The Networkers.

Are they the Networkers or are they the mall surveyors. Either way you don't want to make eye contact. You become deeply involved in conversation or if you're quick enough you pull out your cell pretending to be immersed in a very important call.

They are handing out business cards, CD's, DVD's, brochures, catalogs, flyers, or even samples to everyone that walks by.

They are so excited about getting this information into your hands they literally scare most people to death.

They begin talking about famous home business entrepreneurs like Robert Kiyosaki and most don't know who in the world he is. The average person thinks motorcycle when the hear the last name Kiyosaki - Kawasaki... whatever!

The sad part is that I used to be one of these people. I only did it a handful of times but I'm sitting here writing and shaking my head thinking of all the people on my team, upline, sideline, downline, that are still doing this. It really does break my heart because it makes us all look goofy and gives our phenomenal industry a bad rap but more importantly, I fell so bad for them because they are wasting their valuable time.

Think about this for a minute. Even if you did find a good prospect this way, what is the first thing they think they have to do? The same stinking thing you did. So you may have found a true product-lover and ultimate business builder but no one with a true business mind want to walk around a mall on Saturday mornings. Give me a break!

So what about all the CD's, DVD's, brochures and the like that some people actually do take from you with their pathetic little smiles? Where do you honestly think all these end up?

You guessed it!

In the good old circular file.

So now you wasted a ton of your valuable time and guess what else you wasted? A ton of money. Those business aids are not cheap. CD's can run you as much as a couple buck per CD; DVD's up to 4 bucks a piece. The samples are downright outrageous and you think people would at least try them in their pretty packaging? Nope. If the sample ever gets out of their vehicle or purse it usually ends up in the trash.

And how about catalogs. OMG... They are so expensive. I would literally get a pit in my stomach when someone would ask if I had one. It's like I wanted to get within inches of their face and tell them they could only have it if they promised to at least look at it instead of using it as a coaster or door stop.

Gosh, I was so naïve.

About the only good thing that came out of wasting all that money and time was that I had a good tax write off at the end of the year. It still makes me sick though to think of how many business aids ended up in the garbage because of course you could purchase a couple hundred of something and the company never tells you that they are changing a product line in 2 weeks. Now all that stuff you bought is worthless or in the least, outdated.

One other point before I get to the good stuff. These business aids are a huge industry for the companies. Contrary to what they tell you, they are not providing these things out of the goodness of their hearts or to truly help you build your business. They are smart, savvy business owners who have created a side industry within an industry.

Then the heavens opened up and I found out how to find my true TARGET MARKET. I learned how to compete.

I learned hot to develop the right message and get it to the right audience.
