One of the richest and most contemporary cities on the continent of Africa is Accra; located in the country of Ghana. Accra is also Ghana’s capital and most populated city. The city is home to Kotoka International Airport, which is able to accommodate even the largest of aircrafts. With international connections to Europe and North America, flights to Accra are an easy part of your vacation package. With its beautiful beaches and many sights, Accra, Ghana is a wonderful escape.

A sightseeing tour should definitely be on your agenda of things to do in Accra. Renting a car or SUV is easy to do, as many of the larger Accra hotels offer this service. To hire the service of a car and driver, you should expect to pay about $9.00 an hour; however you can book a ten hour day for about $75 with extra charges for fuel. Drivers are usually very good guides and can explain the different attractions in detail.

Taxis are another way to travel about Accra, but you must be aware of the different types there are. Many taxis are not metered, you will negotiate a fee with the driver before you leave but some taxis are metered, and they tend to be a bit more expensive. Another taxi option is a shared taxi. These have a set rate per passenger and will follow a fixed route. These can be a very productive way to travel through Accra and a way to hit all the most desired tourist spots.

Besides renting a car or utilizing one of the taxis, a third option for travel around Accra is a tro tro. These are vans which serve as the city’s public transit system. They have been described as unreliable and not the safest way to travel in Accra.

On your sightseeing tour, here are some of the not to miss attractions:

The National Museum

A wide array of fine art, textiles and pottery can be enjoyed here. The museum also boasts many pieces from all over Africa including Zulu wooden statues, bronze heads from Nigeria and carvings from the Congo.

Makola Market

Accra’s main shopping district where you can find produce, tools, shoes and clothes among other things. Makola Market’s traders are almost all women.

Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum

This is a beautiful memorial park dedicated to the first president of Ghana.

The Beaches

There are several beaches in Accra, Ghana where you can enjoy the entertainment of acrobats and musicians. Some charge an entrance fee and will have many peddlers with a wide array of things to sell to tourists.

Here is a list of well-liked places to stay and eat during your trip to Accra, Ghana.

Accra Hotels

There are many hotels to choose from in Accra including the most popular Golden Tulip Hotel. Also recommended are the La Badi Beach Hotel, La Palm Hotel, African Regent Hotel and the Highgate Hotel. All offer quality accommodations and lavish amenities such as pools, bars and restaurants.
Eating is another activity you will be interested in while in Accra. With a wide variety of local and western choices, you will not go hungry. Osu seems to offer the best selection of eateries.

Accra Restaurants

Haveli is a popular restaurant serving Indian cuisine. Maquis Tante Marie is a favorite for African food. American travelers who are homesick might like Frankie’s for their selections of Western favorites.
