The world we live in is so dramatically different from the way it was when we were children. School shootings, snipers, hijacked planes; violent movies and so much more surround us on a daily basis. It’s no wonder that many people get depressed, anxious, and stressed on a regular basis! Can you fathom how your children feel as they are growing up amidst it all? It is so easy to feel overwhelmed.

We can’t change our whole society but there are things we can do to buffer the negative influence that directly hits our homes and us. I know that for me personally, I am usually a very positive person. And I have even found that things take a toll on me where I have felt enveloped in a gray cloud. I decided to take action instead of feeling like a victim and letting my bright outlook dim.

1. Don’t watch or read the news so much.

I really like to stay abreast of current events but at times it can just be too much. Try to only watch one news show a day and maybe just read the newspaper on Sundays. This way you will still feel informed but not bombarded with bad news.

2. Pray. Prayer helps me take my focus off of our worldly problems and shifts it back to God. It instills peace and allows me to give my worries and rest them on God’s shoulders instead of my own.

3. Surround yourself with positive images.

I have tried to limit what action movies and shows I watch because I don’t like that violence bouncing around in my head all of the time. Christian music helps fill my mind with good thoughts and feelings, and I only get educational computer games for my kids. No violence or fighting. Read uplifting or happy books and watch more family shows that encourage and uplift.

4. Slow your life down.

I get irritable and stressed when I am tired and overloaded with appointments and errands. If I get enough sleep and schedule our lives where we can have “down-time” and breaks in-between things, I am much more able to handle things in a calmer manner.

5. Focus on healthier living.

Drink more water, get exercise or take walks to get the blood pumping through your veins. Lower the caffeine you take in and try to serve healthier meals for your family. Sit down as a family and eat. Only take medications if necessary and again - get plenty of sleep!

6. Network with friends.

Surround yourself with people who encourage you and add love and laughter to your life. Volunteer and give back to others as well.

7. Bring light into your life!

If you are like me, sunshine alone picks up your mood. If it’s nice out – make sure you spend some time in the fresh air and sunshine. If it’s crummy out or no natural sunshine is available, create your own! Install a fluorescent light in your kitchen or light candles that warm as well as brighten up a gloomy day. Put nightlights or twinkle lights on your indoor trees to add a soft glow to your evenings.

Just because our world is in disarray doesn’t mean we have to be. If we surround ourselves with good then we can feel happier on the whole and pass that outlook on to our children. They will certainly need to learn how to arm themselves and protect their heart and mind from a gloomy world!

So take control of your emotional health, and don’t let the world steal your happiness.
