It used to be with international travel that the only safe way to arrange travel accommodations was via hotel room rentals or perhaps booking a tour or cruise in which case an agency or professional would take care of these arrangements. Now with modern communication tools available, the internet and inexpensive internet phone calling services all of this has changed. You can easily arrange vacation rentals overseas and confirm these easily, inexpensively and in most cases without problems or duress.

You can scour properties easily over the internet at such places as Craigslist, Kijiji easily and without effort from the convenience and comfort of your home, office or internet most easily. A wide variety of vacation properties are available. If it’s a seaside holiday there are no shortage of sites and rentals available. If it’s just a vacation in a warmer clime. As opposed to seashore, say Phoenix in the states or Victoria British Columbia for Canadians wishing to retain their Canadian health care coverage and benefits that can be done as well. If you are looking to rent someone else’s condo as opposed to a straight rental – you can find and deal with the owners of the condominium directly that can be done is a similar means. If it’s a summer vacation you are after – then check out posting boards – such as sellyourmanitobacottage.com. Lastly if you are arranging say an eco or green tour vacation and need a base of operations to base yourself out of – then this is a perfect to way to arrange such a location. With the internet you can set yourself up in such a manner a well.

With hotel prices, and hotel service fees, on the rise, direct property rentals are very and most affordable options that is on the rise. Not only are costs more affordable but owners with spare and surplus property times left over are more than happy to afford you and reduce their overall and fixed costs to themselves. You as a traveler are providing a welcome source of income and even subsidy to their properties on a more informal side. This way as well it does not involve the outlay of funds, obligation as administration and maintenance fees of a time share purchase. On top of that you generally have full almost at home provisions and services – like a full kitchen, in house or on property laundry services, perhaps maid service and often along with his hotel amentias and luxuries such as a hot tub, swimming pool or private beach. Your setup may well be more conducive comprehensive and luxurious for the purposes of hosting a family on vacation or your larger travel group as opposed to individual , less spacious and more restrictive single hotel or motel rooms.

What are the pitfalls and items to watch on the other side? For one you are dealing with an owner directly who may not be as easy to contact as a 24 hour hotel reservation line. The owner may have a job so that they are not around 24/7 for you to contact. Add to that time zone changes to consider for best times to call and not call by phone. You may well have to prepay a non-refundable deposit or even a larger portion of your fees. The owner most likely will not accept convenient and safer for you credit cards as payments. They may also request or insist on a credit check, references or other checks that a hotel would not ask for require or insist of. A private reservation may even request your passport details or details of your employment and employer.

What should you watch out for? If you do have problems it is not as if you are dealing with a large corporate hotel or vacation chain who are service based and take care of problems ( well at least generally). You are dealing with a private owner, who while usually will do their best, may exaggerate the condition, benefits, location and offerings of their property in an effort to “rent” it out. Any refunds or rate reductions that you request come out of their pocket directly and may involve expensive phone calls from you “vacation” spot.

What to do. Does your vacation rental research thoroughly and completely?
Ask for documentation in writing and emails as opposed to verbally. Ask for photos. Keep a good and solid record of all correspondence. This way there can be no mistakes in communication and a good solid base for any relevant discussions. Ask questions thoroughly on any hidden or extra fees that may arise once on-site. For example inquire before hand on extra fees for internet access, cleaning or phone calls (local calls especially). It never hurts to ask specify and document.

A vacation rental can give you an out of the way vacation of your dreams that you will always look back to and relish, all at a more affordable cost. On top of that you may well have an adventure of living among the locals as opposed to being placed in a generic, vanilla corporate hotel setting. Pleasant travels and vacationing.
